A Brief History of the Borough of Wenonah

In December 1870, a railroad station, which was much too elegant to transport produce form the local farmers, was about all that stood in the beginning of the town that we now know as Wenonah. There were farms, mainly growing sweet potatoes, but they had been there long before the train station. On December 19, 1870, a special West Jersey Railroad train l

eft Camden for the “New Mantua” train station. The train carried businessmen who were interested in creating a new suburban town, a planned town that would consist of more than 572 acres, currently used as farmland. The Mantua Land and Improvement Company was incorporated on February 21, 1871. The company marked out the town plots into fourteen squares of twelve building lots, each measuring 75 X 150 feet deep. The railroad station, which was situated on the West side of the tracts, was the core of the rectangle, which was one-half mile in length and one-third more in width. Mantua Avenue was one hundred feet wide and all other streets were sixty-six feet wide. On April 3, 1871, it was resolved that the name of the new town would be Wenonah. It is an Indian name meaning first-born daughter. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, “The Song of Hiawatha”, presumes that Wenonah was Hiawatha’s mother. In 1872, the Wenonah House was opened for guests. The forty-room hotel boasted of having running water and gas in every room. The hotel was furnished elegantly to attract the rich Philadelphians for the hot summers. Advertisements noted that Wenonah is a favorite place for all those seeking country fresh air. Another brochure advertised, “There is no healthier location in the vicinity of Philadelphia.” The Mantua Land and Development Company sales brochures indicated, “the ground was high with good drainage and free of Malaria.” The same brochure indicated that the town was “only twelve miles from Philadelphia and that Wanamaker’s delivered!”

No Swimming at Wenonah Lake – August 5, 2026

Until further notice, swimming will not be allowed at Wenonah Lake, however the lake park will remain open.

Property tax bills for 2026-2027 have been mailed. The 2026 3rd quarter grace period has been extended to August 20, 2026. Any payment received after the August 20th grace period shall accrue interest back to August 1st. Next bulk item collection is July 21st. Call Borough Office by noon on Monday, July 20th to be put on list.

Our bulk item collection dates for 2026 will be on the (3rd) third Tuesday of every month. You must call the Borough Office to be placed on the bulk list. Please call anytime during the month to schedule bulk pick-up. You must call no later than noon on Monday, July 20th to be included. Let us know as soon as you think you are going to have bulk trash; please do not wait until Monday to call. Please do not leave voice mail messages with the Borough Office OR the Public Works Department regarding bulk trash collection.

Please be considerate of your neighbor and your community, do not put your bulk items out to the curb days in advance of bulk collection day. Per Ordinance 24-3, items placed out on a non-bulk week are in violation and will be required to be removed from curbside.

Water/Sewer Bills Have Been Mailed – Second Quarter Bill Due August 1, 2026

Second quarter 2026 water/sewer bills have recently been mailed to all residents. The due date is August 1st with a 10-day grace period. Any payment received after the 10-day grace period shall accrue interest back to August 1, 2026

The 2nd quarter bill includes the $150 flat fee for sewer, $125 flat fee for water (includes 6,000 gallons of actual use each quarter) plus resident’s actual household water usage over 6,000 gallons for the prior three months (April 1st – June 30th) billed at the 2026 rates per 1,000 gallons.

You can also view your bill online by simple clicking on the View Current Bill tab in your account next to Make a Payment tab.

Payments are accepted by mail or in person during regular business hours. Residents may also leave their payment in the secured drop box located by the front door of the Municipal building. Please include the detached stub along with payment.
