The entrance to Mount Sunflower is getting a new cattle guard so the main entrance is closed through next week (2/16-22/2026 but the alternate entrance is the open gate to the east. Be aware we had significant rain last night (2/13/2026) so travel is messy.

1.30” of much needed rain last night on the Mountain, making vehicle traffic impossible , very muddy. Walk-in only until further notice. Thanks, ol’man on the mountain.

New weather station on the mountain. The QR code will take you to the website with the data. It provides real-time weather conditions to visitors and nearby residents. So now you can see the windspeed while you are there!
Thanks to Tim Denham who is working on a project to install weather stations at the high point of various states. Quite an amazing young entrepreneur and inventor.
FYI- There is surveillance in case someone tries to steal or vandalize.

Frosty on the high point. Roads are still treacherous because of the wet snow and rain we have received in the last 3 days. Since midnight we have received over an inch of rain. The ol’ man of the mountain as not ventured out very far. Not often do you see snow on top of the fence posts in western Kansas. Stay safe and use common sense.

We are receiving an extremely welcome WET snow fall that started in the early morning hours and is continuing as of 8 am thus making driving to Mt. Sunflower unadvisable.

We are so very thankful for the Weskan Rural Firemen and the Sharon Springs Firemen who quickly controlled the grass fire on Mt. Sunflower. They were challenged by darkness, wind, rough terrain and multiple fences. It could have been so much worse.
If you have ever wanted to donate to Mt. Sunflower, now is the time. You can do this via Venmo. We would love to make a big donation to these rural fire departments. They saved the Mountain! Venmo: -Sunflower-1

Mount Sunflower has received almost 2 inches of rain in a short period of time tonight 6/8/2024 and I am sure all roads leading to the high point are making travel difficult especially the last 3/10th of a mile. Please use common sense when traveling gravel and dirt roads. Thanks the management
