Our next holiday tradition is a lovely Polish Christmas eve tradition.

Polish Christmas Eve is full of fun traditions! We always set the table for an extra guest in case someone unexpected stops by. It is customary to have at least 12 different foods on the table; we do not eat meat on Christmas Eve, so the meal usually consists of lots of fish prepared different ways. The meal begins when the first star appears in the night sky. We start off by sharing Oplatek. Oplatki are decorative wafers about the size of an envelope. Everyone breaks off a piece of wafer and then we go from guest to guest sharing our bits of Oplatek (I take a pinch off of yours and you take a pinch of mine). As we eat the pieces we exchange hugs and well wishes.

We continue our staff's holiday traditions this week, with some Christmas eve traditions.

On Christmas Eve, our family gets together and we share a "Soup Buffet." We buy or make 5 or 6 different soups. We serve the soup in fun, funky Christmas mugs-along with homemade bread. It has become an easy, yet warm way to enjoy the company of family and friends.

Baking is a holiday staple for many of us. Today's tradition is one staff member's Christmas cake.
This is my Christmas cake after it got it’s brandy soak, and before being wrapped up to store until Christmas. It is my mum’s recipe and just the smell of it baking makes me feel like it is Christmas! She has made it for our family every year for as long as I can remember and this is the first year I am attempting to make it myself. It was surprisingly easy and also I had to laugh because the liquid that binds it together, is brandy. Definitely a festive recipe!

We suggest trying "Nigella Christmas : food, family, friends, festivities" for a Christmas cake recipe.

Today's staff holiday tradition is hiding a pickle (ornament) in the tree! We welcome you to share your traditions with us this season!

We hide a pickle ornament on the tree, and the person to find it is supposed to get good luck in the next year.

It is often said that the pickle tradition came from Germany, but a 2016 survey from YouGov found that 91% of Germans had never heard of the tradition. No matter where it comes from, the pickle ornament is a fun Christmas tradition that has found a place in many homes.

Leading up to Christmas, our staff is sharing some of our holiday traditions. We invite you to share your traditions in the comments.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite memories was going with my dad to cut down a Christmas tree. At the time I remember being cold, looking for the perfect tree, maybe getting to use the saw, and eventually taking our tree to the warming station for hot coco and heading home listing to A Christmas Together with John Denver and the Muppets.

Now that I’m a mom, I love that my kids get this same tradition. Every years my kids get to head up north, and they pick out a Christmas tree with their dad, After hunting season, that tree comes home and we all decorate it together with hot coco and A Christmas Together with John Denver and the Muppets.

Start a new holiday tradition! Over the coming days, we will be sharing the Library staff's holiday traditions. Share your traditions with us, or maybe you'll pick-up one of ours. 😊

My family loves to put up ridiculous outdoor decorations, the bigger the better! We love the Rankin/Bass Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and wanted to include Bumble in our decorations. But only a LIFE SIZED (12 foot) Bumble would do. He is a favorite of the neighborhood kids.

Happy Hanukkah to all of those celebrating the Festival of Lights over the next eight days!

Chanukah Sameach, or Happy Hanukkah, to all of those celebrating the Festival of Lights over the next eight days. Our Jewish neighbors will gather to light their Hanukkah menorahs, display them proudly in the window, and recall the miracles of both ancient times and the present day. The story of Hanukkah has reminded the world of the Jewish people’s perseverance and the persistence of faith, even against daunting odds. The City of West Allis wishes those who celebrate peace and joy this Hanukkah season and into the new year!

I'm sure a lot of you have missed the Friends of the West Allis Public Library's monthly book sales! Never fear! The Friends' book sale now has a permanent place in the Library. Next time you're here, take a peek just to the left of the entrance.

Hi, Friends! You may have noticed that with all of the new guidelines and restrictions regarding gatherings of people, we haven't been able to host a book sale in quite a few months. So, we brought the book sale to a permanent place inside the Library! The next time you visit WAPL, take a peek just to the left of the entrance doors to shop new-to-you fiction, nonfiction, kids' books, puzzles, games, and more! We'll be filling up the shelves over the next few days. Happy thrifting! ✨

All book store sales go toward Library programming and other extras not covered in the Library's annual budget. Thank you so much to all of our patrons who donate items to us!

(Please note that due to COVID guidelines, we are unable to accept new donations at this time.)
