The Youth and Family Project, Inc. Support youth and families to help them achieve an increased sense of safety, hope and belonging.

To provide the most effective, meaningful services to people seeking help from The Youth and Family Project, it is essential to fully understand what brought them to this point in their lives, and then to meet them where they're at. This process begins by assessing personal challenges, needs and strengths. Goals are established, and a plan of action is developed, based on individual skills and com

fort levels. Resource information and referrals to additional sources of help are provided to address unmet needs and encourage each person to work towards achieving their own defintion of success. Program participants are greeted with purpose and hope, and are offered opportunities for growth and change. Children, teens and adults benefit from a variety of educational formats, counseling, peer-support groups, and visitation services, each designed to promote a healthy sense of self-worth and enrich relationships in their lives.

Why nature-based counseling?

Research shows that time in nature can support mental health by helping reduce stress, improve mood, support attention, and create space for connection. For youth and families, being outside can also make it easier to move, notice, talk, and practice coping skills in a hands-on way.

Our Nature-Based Counseling Groups use the outdoors as part of the therapeutic process. During each 45-minute group, youth and families walk, explore nature, practice nature-based coping skills, talk about feelings, and work through things together in a supportive setting.

Nature gives us a chance to slow down, notice what’s happening in our bodies, listen to the sounds around us, observe animals and the environment, and build skills that can be used beyond group.

Groups are free, and no Riveredge membership is required.

Groups begin June 11 at Riveredge Nature Center.

World Environment Day is a reminder that small actions - like caring for nature (picking up trash in your local park) or conserving energy (taking a shorter shower) can make a big difference.
