What a turnout! Last night, Author John U. Bacon had readers across West Bloomfield captivated by his extensive knowledge of the Edmund Fitzgerald and its crew. Attention local artisans and businesses! Applications are open for a table at the library’s Shop Small Maker Mart. Taylor Beardsall, ATR-BC, facilitated the library's first "Fine Art of Caregiving" workshop yesterday afternoon. The "Joy Collage" project used magazines and paper to represent things that bring the participants joy.

Next week, caregivers and their loved ones are invited to join a "String Painting" project to create abstract art pieces using string, ink, and watercolor paint. In session 3, participants will create a "Heart Map," and in session 4, they will create "Mindful Watercolor."

Each session offers caregivers and their loved ones an opportunity to bond and explore new mediums. Participants leave with a bag of supplies to facilitate more creative expression at home. The program is funded by a grant from Molina Healthcare of Michigan.

VD: Cathy stands behind a box at a table in her office. She pulls out each item as she describes it. A cardboard cutout of LaBook, Higashiura Library's Mascot, features an illustrated character with an open book for a head and writing utensils for a body. The temari are small balls with colorful patterns made from fine thread.

Congratulations to Ellie for completing our list of Books to Read while Counting the Days 'til Kindergarten! 🎉 The library's collection of early literacy posters are a great way to get young readers excited to explore new and classic books. Posters for kids from birth through Kindergarten are available to library members upon request. Bring your completed poster back to either branch to claim a reward.

EVENT FULL! Wow, West Bloomfield is really into the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald. We scarcely began to promote our event with John U. Bacon (author of 14 books, including The Gales of November: The Untold Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald), and it's already full!

There is no waitlist for this event, so if you were interested but haven't had a chance to register yet, keep an eye on our website for cancellations. The event will take place at the Main Library on Wednesday, October 21 at 6:30 PM.

The West Bloomfield Library received a $10,000 grant from Molina Healthcare of Michigan to launch a new series, "The Fine Art of Caregiving." These art therapy sessions are designed for caregivers and their loved ones living with memory loss.

Each week, a board-certified registered art therapist will facilitate a new art medium/intervention. After each workshop, participants will leave with a kit of art supplies to continue their creative journey together at home. A second 4-week series is planned for this spring. After both series, the library will host an art show displaying participants' works.

The first session begins next Wednesday, October 14. Register for one session or all 4. Register online or by calling the library.
