Good Afternoon, West Brookfield Residents,
We wanted to make you aware that four vehicles were broken into on Sunday between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM. One of the vehicles had its window smashed. We are actively investigating the incident. In the meantime, please remember to:

Lock your vehicle doors, take all valuables with you, never leave items in plain sight inside your vehicle

Please stay vigilant, look out for one another and call us if you see suspicious activity!

We want to keep our community informed about the current budget situation and what it means for police services.

Based on updated financial guidance, the department must reduce an additional $100,000 from an already reduced non-override budget. In total, this represents a reduction of approximately 22% compared to last year.

At this level, the department anticipates a reduction in staffing equivalent to 2 full-time and 2 part-time officers. As a result, the overnight shift will not be staffed.

When no West Brookfield officers are available, emergency calls for service will be handled with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police. Response times are likely to increase as Troopers will be responding from various barracks or communities where they are located.

In addition, the overtime budget and multiple operational line items have been reduced, which will impact scheduling flexibility, training, and equipment maintenance.

We remain committed to providing the highest level of service possible with the resources available and will continue to adjust operations as needed.

This update is being shared to keep residents informed. If you have questions, please contact the department.

Officer Jolin came in the other night and accepted several “bear bags” generously donated to the Masons Lodge in West Brookfield. These bags from Project Delta are meant to be given to children in times of need.

Thank you to the Masons Lodge for their thoughtful donation, and a special thank you to Officer Jolin for stepping up and making this happen for the police department and community. 🚔

03/30/2026

As you may have heard, our community is currently facing difficult financial challenges. As a result, the Police Department has been directed to reduce our non-override budget by 10%.
This cut will significantly impact service delivery in West Brookfield, including the loss of 24/7 coverage during 8 hour periods, beginning in July. In addition, all officers in this budget proposal will be assigned more administrative responsibilities, which will affect our core priority of patrol.
Our Town Administrator has scheduled several informational meetings, so residents can learn more, and provide input on the level of service you want us to provide. Please see our updated budget presentation.

Join our Town Administrator for the following informational meetings:
Wednesday April, 1, 2026 at 6:30PM at the West Brookfield Elementary School

Monday April 13, 2026 at 6:30PM at the West Brookfield Senior Center

Monday April 26, 2026 at 6:30PM at the West Brookfield Elementary School.

Subject: Upcoming Proposition 2 ½ Override - Ballot Question and Annual Town Meeting Warrant Article
The Board of Selectmen, Advisory Committee and West Brookfield’s Financial Team held public meetings on November 12, 2025, December 4th, 2025, and January 5, 2026, to discuss the financial projections pertaining to the Fiscal Year 2027 Budget. What became apparent was that the Town continues to have an increasing structural financial gap caused by revenues vs expenditures. In the past the town has used one-time revenues to fill the gap (not a recommended practice) to go into town meeting with a “balanced” budget. However, as was forewarned by the Advisory Committee and the Town’s Financial Consultant for the last six or seven years, supplementing the budget this way would prove to be unsustainable as those one-time revenues would be depleted over time, which has led to the decision to propose an override. The amount of the override being proposed is $1,150,000. This amount covers the $863,000 budget gap for FY2027, and the remaining $280,000 addresses the FY2028 budget gap.
We will be providing information through public information forums, printed materials, departmental budget presentations, town’s cable access television channel and the town’s website. We will be holding several public informational forums over the next month. The purpose is to provide you with factual information over the course of these meetings that will include but is not limited to the following:

Explanation of Proposition 2 ½

Explanation of how the Town’s financial situation changed over the years

Explanation of why the Town/School can’t operate within the existing 2.5% increase provided by Proposition 2 ½

Fact driven financial and comparison data

Estimated annual tax impacts

What do the two scenarios (override passes or override fails) provide or reduce

Identify/explain long-term financial plans

Spending measures implemented

Revenue sources being explored

Capital projects coming forward, the expected costs and how they will be funded

Exemptions/abatements for seniors, veterans or low-income residents
