Just before 6:00 PM, the West Chester Borough Fire Department was dispatched to the 500 block of East Barnard Street for a reported fire alarm activation. While units were responding, additional reports indicated smoke was visible in the basement, prompting the incident to be upgraded, add additional fire units to the scene.

Upon arrival, crews located a smoke condition in the basement that was determined to be the result of cooking activity in an apartment above. Firefighters checked the area, cleared the smoke from the building, and made certain there were no remaining hazards.

The incident was placed under control quickly, and WCFD units cleared
