It is with profound sorrow that the George Clay Fire Company, Station 39, of West Conshohocken Pennsylvania, announce the passing of our Meritorious Life Member Robert “Bugsy” Rockett, Sr.
Robert, known affectionately to his fellow firefighters as “Bugsy,” joined the George Clay Fire Company in 1975 and devoted nearly five decades of his life to the service of his community. Throughout his distinguished career, he served in numerous roles, rising through the ranks as Firefighter, Engineer, Chief Engineer, and Assistant Chief. He also served with great dedication as Vice President of the Active Association and as President of the Fireman’s Relief Association — positions that reflected the deep trust and respect his fellow members placed in him.
Beyond his service on the fireground, Bugsy carried his passion for the fire service into his professional life. Beginning in the late 1970s, he worked at Hale Pump in Conshohocken as a machinist and assembler in their fire pump division — a career he proudly maintained until the company’s closing in 2012. In that role, he personally built and serviced the fire pumps that protect communities throughout the region, including every pump on George Clay’s own apparatus. In a very real sense, his hands helped safeguard lives far beyond the borders of West Conshohocken.
Bugsy was more than a firefighter and a craftsman — he was a cornerstone of this company and a friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His generosity, his humor, and his unwavering commitment to his brothers and sisters in the fire service left an indelible mark on everyone around him. He was loved by all and will be truly and deeply missed.
