• 𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙚 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙛 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 • The West Covina Fire Department is proud to announce the promotion of Fire Captain Brian McDermott to the position of Assistant Fire Chief.

Chief McDermott has served the West Covina community since 2001 and brings more than two decades of experience, leadership, and commitment to the Department into his new role. In his new role, Chief McDermott will serve as the Assistant Fire Chief assigned to A-Shift.

Please join us in congratulating Assistant Fire Chief Brian McDermott on his well-earned promotion and wishing him continued success in this next chapter of his career.

Within the West Covina Fire Department’s organizational structure, the Assistant Fire Chief rank is equivalent to the Battalion Chief rank utilized by many fire departments throughout California. Our Assistant Fire Chiefs serve as the Department’s shift commanders and carry the radio designation “Battalion 12.”

𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚, 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙨! • Our newly hired
Firefighter/Paramedic recruits have completed Week 1 of our Departmental Recruit Academy. Recruit FF/PM Josh Gonzalez, Recruit FF/PM Lucas Esquer, and Recruit FF/PM Alex Delgado will spend the next six weeks receiving instruction and training from our department personnel.

Following successful completion of the rigorous didactic and manipulative testing conducted throughout the academy, each recruit will receive their station assignment and begin their probationary year in the field to further develop and demonstrate their skills and abilities in service to the West Covina community.

Congratulations to our new recruits on achieving this career milestone. We wish you all continued success!

• 𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚, 𝙀𝙭𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨! 🇯🇵🚒• The West Covina Fire Department was proud to welcome students and chaperones visiting from our sister city of Ohtawara, Japan, as part of the annual Student Exchange Program hosted by the East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center.

During their visit, our firefighters gave the group a tour of fire station 122, introduced them to Quint 122 and its equipment, and shared a look at what it’s like to serve the West Covina community as a Firefighter.

Thank you East San Gabriel Valley Japanese Community Center for including us in this special tradition. We hope the students enjoyed their time with us and wish them a memorable stay in West Covina!

This annual student exchange is a tradition that brings together the City of Ohtawara, the ESGVJCC, and City of West Covina , continues to strengthen the bonds between our communities. For years, students from West Covina have had the opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese culture through homestays in Ohtawara. This reciprocal exchange gives students from Japan the opportunity to experience American culture and life in Southern California.

𝙍𝙄𝘾 𝙋𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙑𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙤 • Our personnel recently completed an in-house training video that focused on the proper use and deployment of our newest Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC) pack.

This video provides our department personnel with a training resource that can be reviewed as needed to reinforce equipment familiarity, proper deployment, and firefighter rescue procedures at any time.

A RIC pack (Rapid Intervention Crew pack) is a portable emergency breathing-air system firefighters carry specifically to help rescue another firefighter who is trapped, injured, disoriented, or running low/out of air inside a hazardous environment such as a structure fire.

It contains a SCBA air cylinder, regulator/pressure components, and multiple ways to provide emergency air to a downed firefighter.

𝙑𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙚 • Yesterday, West Covina Fire Department responded to the 1600 block of Grenoble Avenue for a reported vehicle fire. Engine 124 arrived to find a well-involved sedan with all occupants safely out of the vehicle. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, containing it to the vehicle. No injuries were reported.

Additional calls reporting smoke in the same area prompted the dispatch of Engine 125. After conducting an area check, crews determined the reports were related to this incident.

𝙁𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬/ 𝙀𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 • Engine 124, Quint 122, Rescue Ambulance 124, and Battalion 12 responded to reports of a two-vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of S. Azusa Ave. and Amar Rd. Emergency Crews arrived to find two vehicles involved, with severe damage to the driver’s side of one vehicle and its sole occupant trapped inside.

West Covina Fire Department Firefighter/Paramedics forced entry through an accessible portion of the vehicle to gain access to the trapped occupant, allowing for rapid patient assessment and advanced medical care to the trapped occupant while firefighters simultaneously conducted extrication operations with the Jaws of Life. Despite the coordinated life-saving efforts by our fire personnel, the patient was determined to be deceased.

The sole occupant of the second vehicle was not injured and was taken into custody on scene by the West Covina Police Department. The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the West Covina Police Department.

𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙚 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙛 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 • Fire Chief McKeown was honored to participate in a recent community meeting hosted by Mayor Pro Tem Ollie Cantos, providing an opportunity to engage directly with residents, answer questions, and discuss topics important to our community.

Meaningful conversations like these strengthen relationships, build trust, and help ensure the Fire Department remains connected to the needs and priorities of those we proudly serve.

Thank you to Mayor Pro Tem Ollie Cantos for hosting this community discussion. We also extend our appreciation to Senator Susan Rubio for attending and supporting the West Covina community. Finally, thank you to everyone who attended, shared their questions and perspectives, and contributed to a meaningful conversation.
