West Dennis Library

West Dennis Library The West Dennis Library is one of the five village libraries in Dennis and has proudly served the village of West Dennis for 95 years. Stop in our library.

The West Dennis Library is a full service library and a proud member of the Dennis Library System. In addition to our extensive book collection we have a wide variety of media including audio books and DVDs. And to all patrons with a valid CLAMS card, we offer the newest books available for 1 week only as part of our "Rapid Reads" program. We also have a similar program called "Rapid View" which

offers the patron a chance to see brand new movies with out the long waiting lists, but the title can only be checked out for 3 days. We have a copy machine, a FAX machine and a wireless printer for computer use. Our main area offers several seating areas to encourage patrons to relax and linger in a friendly setting. Five brand-new internet access computers are available to the public and we have 24/7 Wi-fi for those of you who prefer to use your personal computer. Our cheerful children’s room houses puzzles and toys as well as numerous new and exciting books for children, and for adults on parenting and children’s issues. The juvenile reader's area houses chapter books, and the young adult area has many great offerings for the young adult readers. A computer for games and word processing is also available. We have a Drop-In Story Hour on Tuesday mornings, and special programs during school vacation weeks. In our adult area there are several quiet work areas for research, study and reading. Upstairs the library houses the Dennis Historical Society Library “http://www.dennishistsoc.org/” as well as special collections on the Kennedy's, the Presidents, and the Classics. This area is also used by various groups for meetings and is home to our library Book Clubs. Mahjong meets on Thursday mornings. This area is easily accessible to all with the use of our chair lift. Special displays include our Victorian Dollhouse and our Beatrix Potter Collection and a changing display in our case featuring arts and crafts, collections and event related materials. Beyond those facilities available in house, as a member of CLAMS we can access materials all over the Cape and throughout Massachusetts. Our friendly staff and volunteers are happy to help you find what you are looking for, place a request, research a topic and answer your questions. You’ll want to come back!

We know Cape Cod's maritime history. Or do we?

Whaling ships. Sea captains. Provincetown.

But did you know that seven Black whaling captains sailed out of Provincetown in the years after the Civil War?

One of them was Collins A. Stevenson, captain of the Carrie D. Knowles, pictured here. Stevenson made 16 voyages over 15 years and was one of the most accomplished whalers of his day.

His story is part of a much larger and more complicated history of Cape Cod—one that historian Dr. Michael Pregot explores in Slavery and Abolitionism on Cape Cod: A Massachusetts Incongruity.

P.S. The Carrie D. Knowles is also the subject of one of Provincetown's great maritime mysteries. The schooner disappeared in 1904—and was never seen again. Five years later, a man named Elisha Payne claimed that Stevenson and his crew were being held in a Venezuelan prison. The story briefly revived hopes that the missing crew might still be alive, but it was ultimately dismissed as a hoax.

Cape Cod has stories we know by heart. But what about the stories we don't hear as often?

What role did Cape Cod sea captains play in the history of slavery? What did abolition look like here in Massachusetts? And whose stories have been overlooked?

Come curious. Leave with a deeper understanding of our local history.

📚 Free & all are welcome

File this under: you never know what you are going to find in a library book (or a library for that matter 😉)

This time, it wasn't a grocery list, a birthday card, or a doctor's appointment reminder. It was this vintage West Dennis Library bookmark...and honestly, we're a little jealous.

Summer hours until 10 p.m.?
Who approved this? 😂
Maybe some old ideas are worth revisiting . . .

Who remembers Old Colony Bank? Who remembers these bookmarks? And does anyone have fond memories of those late-night library visits?

Tell us everything.

Then sea you for storytime tomorrow morning at10:30am!
We'll share a story, make a shimmering fish craft, and have an o-fish-ally great time together 😉

Feeling stressed? You're not alone.
Life can be busy, noisy, and overwhelming. If you've ever wondered whether meditation could help—but weren't sure where to begin or thought, "I just can't do this"—this program is for you.

Join us on Friday, August 14 at 2:00 PM as author and meditation instructor Linda Preston shares practical, down-to-earth techniques from her new book, Treasure Maps to Meditation: A Guide for Those Who Have Tried and Given Up.

Drawing on more than 40 years of experience, Linda will demonstrate simple meditation techniques and lead a guided meditation designed to help you reduce stress, quiet a busy mind, and find a little more calm in everyday life.

Whether you're a beginner, a skeptic, or looking to deepen your practice, you'll leave with practical tools you can start using right away.

📚 Books will be available for purchase and signing.
