Back in September we decided to create a reading lounge for our students. We ordered comfy sofas, hung cool lights, and painted a mural. After nine months of delay after delay, the sofas were finally delivered yesterday and the reading lounge is complete. I may have retired before the students got to enjoy the space, but I was happy to finally see the completion of our vision and I know that the kids are going to love it!

Getting this from two of our sweet students today makes it harder to leave, but I am thankful for each student I have had the privilege to know and love over the last 16 years.

We celebrated two of our Million Word Readers today with Chick Fil A for lunch, Pearl cupcakes for dessert, and a Swag bag full of goodies. One of our readers had to miss the celebration due to Strep, so she got a Chick Fil A gift card in her Swag bag to use when she’s feeling better.

Sometimes something small grows into something you never expected. Today an opportunity to do some free building turned into the whole class seeing how long the straw chain would end up. Tomorrow they will use their match skills to figure out how long it ended up being.

So I’ve been announcing my retirement to all the kids this week. Today Mrs. Coleman, my replacement, came in with third grade and was already getting in the groove of our library building with the kids. I know she’s going to do an amazing job!

Fourth and fifth grade students have been using the Engineering Design Process to build a better bubble wand. Students had to go through all the steps to imagine, plan, and create a bubble wand using the online 3D creation tool Tinkercad. Mrs. Taft then used the media center's 3D printer to print the students' completed wands. Students whose wands had been printed got to test out and then, if necessary, improve their wands. All the students enjoyed creating their design and really loved getting to actually hold and test their creations.

My favorite part of my job is sharing book I love with kids. Today I got to share another of my loves with some Pre-K and Kindergarten students as I read them a book called Baby Chickens and then introduced them to five of my baby chicks, two barnyard mix chicks and three silkie chicks. Students learned the difference between the two types and loved seeing the differences up close. They also learned that chickens p**p whenever and wherever they want, even when it’s not an appropriate time or place.

We are saddened to let everyone know that, due to illness, Carmen Agra Deedy has had to cancel her visit to Coffee County. We will work with Mrs. Deedy’s agent to try to reschedule the visit for next school year since she has no open dates remaining for this year. If you purchased one of Mrs. Deedy’s books, please send it to the library this week and we will work with Mrs. Deedy to get them autographed. Mrs. Deedy was heartbroken to disappoint our students and staff, so please keep her in your thoughts as she recovers.
