⚠️ Generator Safety Reminder ⚠️

If you’re using a generator during a power outage, please remember:

NEVER run a generator inside your home, garage, basement, or enclosed porch — even if doors or windows are open!

Keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home and direct the exhaust away from windows, doors, and vent openings.

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless — but generator exhaust contains deadly CO.

👉 If you can smell exhaust, it means you are inhaling it. That’s dangerous. Move away immediately and get to fresh air.

CO poisoning can happen quickly and without warning. Protect your family and check on neighbors, especially older adults.

URGENT SAFETY ALERT

We are seeing a lot of Carbon Monoxide emergencies in WG and around the region.

Snow and Ice from Heating Vents to Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

During blizzard conditions, heavy snow and ice can block exterior heating vents, furnace exhaust pipes, dryer vents, and fuel appliance flues. When these vents become obstructed, dangerous carbon monoxide (CO) can build up inside your home.

Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and potentially deadly.

West Greenwich EMA urges residents to:
• Regularly check and clear snow and ice from all exterior vents during and after the storm.
• Pay special attention to low-to-the-ground exhaust pipes from high-efficiency furnaces.
• Clear at least 3 feet around vents to ensure proper airflow.
• Make sure outdoor generators are never operated near windows, doors, or vents.
• Confirm your home has working carbon monoxide detectors on every level.

Warning Signs of Carbon Monoxide Exposure:
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Confusion
• Shortness of breath

If your CO alarm sounds or you suspect carbon monoxide exposure:
1. Move outside to fresh air immediately.
2. Call 911.
3. Do not re-enter the home until emergency personnel say it is safe.

Taking a few minutes to clear vents it could save lives.

Stay safe, West Greenwich.

URGENT WINTER WEATHER NOTICE – WEST GREENWICH EMA 🚨

Severe winter conditions are creating hazardous roadways across town.

❄️ PLEASE STAY HOME AND STAY OFF THE ROADS.

🚫 NO STREET PARKING.

🚜 DPW crews need clear routes to plow and treat roads safely and efficiently.

Every vehicle left on the street slows down snow removal operations and delays emergency response access. Help us help you.

✔ Move vehicles off roadways
✔ Avoid unnecessary travel
✔ Give plow trucks and emergency vehicles plenty of space

Your cooperation allows DPW and first responders to do their jobs quickly and safely.

Thank you for helping keep West Greenwich safe. 🇺🇸

Please stay off the roads.

We are strongly urging all residents to stay home and remain off the roads unless absolutely necessary. A state travel ban remains in effect.

Current conditions are creating hazardous travel and limiting access for emergency vehicles. Our police, fire, EMS, and public works crews are actively responding and working to keep our community safe. They need clear roads and the space to operate safely and efficiently.

Every vehicle on the road makes it more difficult for emergency responders to reach those in need and increases the risk of additional incidents.

Please:
• Avoid all unnecessary travel
• Do not attempt to drive around barricades
• Keep roadways clear for emergency and utility crews
• Check on neighbors by phone, not in person

Your cooperation directly supports the safety of our first responders and your fellow residents.

We will continue to provide updates as conditions change. Stay safe, West Greenwich.

❄️ BLIZZARD SAFETY: Generator Use Can Save Lives — or Put Them at Risk ⚡

Power outages are common during winter storms, but using a generator incorrectly can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, fires, or electrocution.

If you’re using a generator during this blizzard, remember:

🔹 Keep it outdoors — at least 20 feet from your home
🔹 Never use generators in garages, basements, or enclosed spaces
🔹 Install and check carbon monoxide detectors
🔹 Do not overload the generator
🔹 Turn it off and let it cool before refueling
🔹 Store fuel safely and away from living areas

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless — and it can build up quickly, even in cold weather.

Stay prepared. Stay safe. Check on your neighbors.
