Public officials in Pennsylvania and across the northeast have issued air quality warnings as a result of the Canada wildfires, but what does that mean for our horses and large animals?

Here are some tips from Penn Vet New Bolton Center internal medicine experts to keep your four-legged friends healthy as we weather the smoky skies.

🐎Avoid or limit riding and exercise.

💧Clean water buckets frequently.

🧽Minimize additional exposure to dust particles by wetting hay before feeding and only cleaning stalls during turnout.

🩺Call your veterinarian immediately if you notice signs of respiratory disease, such as a cough, nasal discharge, and/or difficulty breathing.

A short study on the Pa Cruelty Law;

With every season change, the complaint calls to LAPS take on a certain "theme". Most calls created because of misunderstanding the current PA Cruelty Law
Spring - animals standing in mud or are muddy
- no shelter from the rain
- the ponies/donkeys should not be allowed on new grass
- its too warm/cold for blankets
- sheep are not shorn yet
Fall - seems to be the time when animals get out of enclosures
- market animals kept in too small spaces and aren't in a
field
Winter - no shelter/blankets
- no water and or food
- too cold for animals to be outside
Summer - no shade
- no water available
- flies are bothering them

Offenses defined

SHELTER: "Access to clean and sanitary shelter and protection from the weather. The shelter must be sufficient to permit the animal to retain body heat and keep animal dry. "
- No mention of building/roof/sides - "shelter" comes down to tree line/hedgerow, a hill/swale, a building next enclosure - that will block the wind- nothing regarding heat or shade.

FOOD/WATER "Necessary sustenance and potable water "
- doesn't need to be available 24/7, but offered
and "necessary " means to sustain life ...

VETERINARY CARE "Necessary veterinary care"
- defined as needed to not place animal in imminent risk of
bodily inury
SANITARY CONDITIONS - need to be bad enough to cause health
conditions for the animals

Humane Agents can only enforce what the Law describes.
