New school year coming in fast! Are you ready?! Here is a list of the events PTO will be supporting if you would like to mark your calendars now! We've also added a QR code that you can scan and add your name if you're interested in volunteering for any of the events. We'll keep that list and reach out as the event gets closer to see if you're still interested. Any help is appreciated!

Help needed! Principal Rivera needs a couple of things before the school year starts. Anyone available for a couple of hours?

*We need a few helpers to help put together some easy items for the staff. Some carts, easels, and furniture. You can help anytime Monday-Friday 8am-3pm.

*The COIA garden is blooming! We need some help pulling weeds and trimming back the pathways.

Screen time — we're all figuring it out as we go, right? Here are two low-key events to help families tackle it together. Come to one, or come to both!

Part 1: Screenagers: Elementary Age Edition
📅 Thursday, April 23
📍 Charter Oak International Academy

5:15 PM — Alternative Device Fair + Pizza 🍕
6:15 PM — Film Screening + Expert Panel

Kick off the evening with pizza and a chance to explore some kid-friendly tech alternatives. Then settle in for a screening of Screenagers:

Elementary Age Edition — a film that digs into the real challenges kids (and parents!) face around screens, from social media pressure to classroom distractions. Afterward, a panel of experts will be on hand to answer your questions.

Part 2: From Screenagers to Tech Contracts
📅 Thursday, April 30 | 6–7 PM
📍 Whiting Lane Elementary School

This one is all about taking action together! You and your child will sit down with local high school principals and — using guided templates and expert insights — actually create your own family digital contract. It's a real, usable plan you'll walk away with. No homework required. 😊

The Charter Oak PTO is sending our deepest condolences to one of our wonderful families on the loss of their dad/husband. The Parker family is a familiar one at our school since Bobbi Jo was an important part of our PTO for years.

Can you join us tomorrow? The Town of West Hartford is hosting its final community conversation around the school budget for next year. There will be several COIA families there sharing how the increased classroom sizes, decreased support, and low test scores are a concern.

Don't be afraid to speak up! You don't have to be a great public speaker! Preparing even just a short statement about your concerns or something that your child has experienced this year is VERY IMPACTFUL!
