❓️Does the West Haven Police Department's K-9's have ballistic vests?
➡️A: Yes! All three of our K-9's have custom fitted bullet and stab proof ballistic vests. These vests were generously donated from various donations and supplied by Vested Interest for K-9's. Each vest is custom tailored to each specific K-9 to ensure the maximum comfort and protection for each dog.
❓️Do your K-9's go home with you?
➡️A: Yes, they do! Outside of their normal working shift, the K-9's reside full time with their handlers at their respective residences. All three dogs are transported to and from work in custom police vehicles designed for the K-9's that are assigned to each handler. It's no secret that the handlers sometimes spend more time with their K-9 partner than their actual human family.
❓️How are the K-9's protected during the extreme heat and cold?
➡️A: The West Haven Police Department and the City of West Haven provides each handler the top of the line technology to ensure the safety and well-being of their dogs while inside the police cruiser. Each police cruiser is equipped with numerous temperature guages throughout the passenger compartment that monitors the temperature. Should the temperature reach a certain threshold, the lights and siren will activate, the rear windows automatically roll down, a window fan is activated, and all the K-9 handlers receive a text and phone call to ensure prompt notification.
❓️Does the K-9 Unit accept donations?
➡️A: Yes, we do. The generosity of donars allows the K-9's and their handlers to receive extra training, and new equipment to ensure top-of-the-line police dogs in our community.
❓️What are the police dogs capable of?
➡️A: K-9 Ado and K-9 Gamble are certified in all aspect of patrol to include the recovery of evidence, to seek out individuals inside structures commonly known as building searches, the protection of their handlers and fellow officers, suspect apprehension, human tracking, and be able to pass obediance testing. K-9 Ado is also assigned to West Haven Police Departments Special Response Team, as well as the United States Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force.
K-9 Hanny, assigned to West Haven Police Department's Street Crime Unit, is trained in narcotics detection. K-9 Hanny is trained on a plethora of illicit narcotics and needs to under-go training on a daily basis.
If you were to put together 20 olympic pools 🏊♂️, and place one single drop of a different odor inside those 20 olympic pools, K-9 Hanny can smell it!
❓️What kind of training is required to have a police dog?
➡️A: The police K-9's of West Haven Police are trained ans certified by the Connecticut State Police K-9 Unit which is globally known as one od the best K-9 training units in the country, if not the world. K-9 teams from across the county and sometimes the world, as well as federal agents lean on the Connecticut State Police K-9 Unit for K-9 training.
Patrol dogs, which are typically german shepherds, belgain mallionis, or both, under go 16 weeks of full time training. Once graduated from the K-9 academy, each K-9 team is required to attend monthly training. Each K-9 team typically does several training sessions a day to sharpen their skills whether it's tracking, obediance, building searches, article recovery, and more.
K-9 Hanny goes through a 12 week full time training course through the Connecticut State Police K-9 Unit. Once completed with the academy, K-9 Hanny only eats when she locates narcotics. This requires the handler to train K-9 Hanny on a daily basis in order for her to eat. Don't worry, for those who have seen K-9 Hanny knows she is well fed thanks to the overwhelming amount of success she has had in her career!
❓️What happens when the K-9 retires?
➡️A: It is customary in our department that the retired K-9 continues to live with their handler and their family while enjoying the retired life sun bathing on the back patio 🌞.
