Black History Month

The Hartford Fire Department is proud to celebrate Black History Month and will be recognizing pioneers throughout the month to acknowledge African-American firefighters and their contributions. Today, we remember and celebrate Firefighter William Henry Jacklyn who was Hartford’s first black firefighter. Born on October 1, 1871, Firefighter Jacklyn joined the department in 1898. A true pioneer who was the only black firefighter throughout his 20 year career. Firefighter Jacklyn passed away on February 23, 1927 after a stellar and honorable career under the most trying circumstances.

Thank you for your sacrifices and service, William.

Robert Erff

It is with sadness we announce the passing of member Robert Erff. A longtime member of the Volunteers of West Haven Fire Dept. Engine & Hose Company One.

Robert "Bob" Erff served our company and the citizens of West Haven beginning June 1955. Serving in many positions during his time, including Captain of the company.

His involvement was crucial to many changes over the years and his advice was always given with the company’s best interests in mind.

Engine & Hose Co. 1 is owner of the oldest fire apparatus in West Haven and Robert was one of the members involved in assuring its preservation and placement at the Savin Rock Museum.

Rest in Peace Robert "Bob" Erff
