🌟 Weekly Wisdom Wednesday 🌟

There are some big local milestones to celebrate this year! 🎉

🚒 S.W. Johnson Steam Fire Engine Co. No. 1 turns 150
👒 S.W. Johnson Ladies Auxiliary turns 90

S.W. Johnson will also be hosting the Rockland County Firemen's Parade this year on Saturday, October 3rd 📅, and it's sure to be an event to remember!

The West Haverstraw Fire Department is made up entirely of dedicated volunteers who answer calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year ⏰. A fact that makes these anniversaries even more remarkable.

We are so grateful for the many years of service these companies have dedicated to our community. ❤️ Their commitment is truly incredible.

That being said, the need for volunteers has never been greater. 🙌 No experience is necessary, just a willingness to serve.

🚧 Route 9W Northbound Lane Milling & Paving Begins Monday Night! 🚧

The long-awaited improvements to Route 9W are finally here!

🛣️ Monday Night: Northbound lane milling and paving will begin in the Village of Haverstraw and continue north to approximately the Wendy's parking lot in West Haverstraw.

🛣️ Tuesday Night: Northbound lane milling and paving will continue in West Haverstraw, with work taking place overnight from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM.

⚠️ Please Note: During portions of Tuesday night's work, the entrances and exits at Zarriello Lane and Zugibe Court will be temporarily closed. The Village has coordinated for the rear gates off Samsondale Avenue to remain open, allowing residents access in and out of the complexes. All emergency service agencies have been notified of these temporary traffic changes.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as these long-awaited improvements are completed. The temporary inconvenience will result in a smoother and safer Route 9W for everyone.

🚨 EXTREME HEAT WARNING & AIR QUALITY ALERT 🚨

Rockland County is expected to experience dangerous heat and poor air quality over the next several days. Please take precautions to protect yourself, your family, and your neighbors.

🔥 Extreme Heat Watch
📅 Wednesday Evening, July 1 – Saturday Evening, July 4
🌡️ Heat index values could reach 112°, with very warm overnight temperatures providing little relief.

🌫️ Air Quality Alert
📅 Today through 11:00 PM
Ground-level ozone levels may become unhealthy, especially for children, older adults, and those with heart or lung conditions. Limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity whenever possible.

Rockland County Emergency Management is providing these Heat Safety Tips:

💧 Drink plenty of water—even if you don’t feel thirsty.
🏠 Stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
👕 Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
⏰ Schedule outdoor work and activities for the early morning or evening.
👥 Check on older adults, young children, neighbors, and anyone without air conditioning.
🚑 Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, or has a high body temperature, call 911 immediately.

⚠️ Remember: Even after outdoor temperatures begin to cool, homes without air conditioning can remain dangerously hot for several days. Continue seeking cool spaces and stay hydrated throughout the heat event.

🌤️⚠️ AIR QUALITY ALERT FOR ROCKLAND COUNTY ⚠️🌤️

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for Rockland County today due to elevated levels of ground-level ozone. Air quality is expected to reach levels that may be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

👶 Children
👴 Older adults
🫁 Individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions
❤️ People with heart disease

These groups should consider limiting prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities during the advisory period.

✅ Tips to reduce exposure:
• Limit strenuous outdoor exercise during the afternoon and evening
• Take frequent breaks if working outdoors
• Stay hydrated 💧
• Keep windows closed and use air conditioning if available
• Monitor symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or chest discomfort

The higher the Air Quality Index (AQI), the greater the health concern. Stay informed and take appropriate precautions to protect yourself and your family. 🌎
