⏱️ Don’t overcharge — Know when to unplug

Leaving devices plugged in after they’ve fully charged increases risk. Some batteries may continue to “top off” or strain the battery.

Best practice: Once a device hits 100%, unplug it or remove the battery (if removable).

Challenge: Set a daily reminder for 30 days to check when your devices are done charging. Let’s make unplugging a habit.

Call to Action: Set a reminder on your phone to unplug devices when done charging—then come back and tell us if it helped you catch any overchargers!

🔋🔥 Welcome to Fire Prevention Week 2025!

The National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) – the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 100 years – has announced “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home” as the theme for Fire Prevention Week™, October 5-11, 2025. This year’s focus on lithium-ion batteries works to better educate the public about how to buy, charge, and dispose of them safely.

Most of the electronics in our homes — smartphones, tablets, power and lawn tools, laptops, e-cigarettes, headphones, and toys, to name just a few — are powered by lithium-ion batteries. If not used correctly or damaged, they can overheat and start a fire or explode. “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home” provides the information, guidance, and resources needed to use lithium-ion batteries with caution and care.

“Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, convenient, and they’re just about everywhere,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “Making sure the public knows how to handle them safely is critical to minimizing the potential risks they present.”

Statewide burn ban in effect due to increased fire risk and continued dry conditions. The ban will be in effect for 14 days from Oct. 2 to Oct. 15 and will be reevaluated prior to expiration.

NEW HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Riverhead Fire Marshal's Office would like to announce the hiring of Fredric Visser to the position of Fire Marshal I. Fred comes to us as a transfer from the Town of Southold, where he was the Fire Marshal since December 2022. Fred has been in the Fire Service since 2015 and has experience as a paid firefighter and as a fire protection technician. Please help us welcome him to Riverhead!

Mayor Walsh and Syracuse Fire Department Chief Monds announced the appointment of 27-year veteran Elton Davis to Executive Deputy Chief of Fire. Davis’ new leadership role includes planning, organizing and providing oversight to firefighting and administrative operations in all facets of the Department.

Chief Monds says, “Chief Davis has a proven track record and possesses the insight, skillset and leadership necessary for this position. He has been an example of dedication and safety in every role he has served in our department. He will have the responsibility of acting as the Fire Chief in my absence and I could not be more confident in his abilities.”

“Syracuse is a safer city because of Chief Davis’ dedicated service. His commitment to fire prevention in homes, businesses, schools, places of worship, stadiums, and buildings of all types is exemplary. Throughout his career, he has made the protection of others his number one priority. That has earned the respect of people throughout our community and among his fellow fire professionals. I am honored to join Chief Monds in appointing him to this new role in the department,” said Mayor Walsh.

The NYS Fire Marshal and Inspectors Association is deeply saddened to hear of the Line of Duty Death of Supervising Fire Marshal George E. Snyder Jr. of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). Our deepest condolences go out to his family, his brothers and sisters with the FDNY, and the City of New York. Rest In Peace.

Thanks to both the New York State Senate and New York State Assembly Majority for moving a package of bills on lithium-ion battery safety, education and awareness this session. Bills like State Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz bill to ban sale of uncertified batteries are great first steps address a rapidly advancing problem. We look forward to working with the Legislature and Executive to get these bills signed and implemented!
