Charges filed in CVS Parking Lot Trailer Theft Investigation
The West Jefferson Police Department has charged Daniel Ray Phipps, 35, of Denny Road, Creston, North Carolina, in connection with the trailer theft that occurred in the CVS parking lot on May 31, 2026.
Following an investigation, Phipps was taken into custody on 6/29/2026 and charged with four felony counts of larceny and two misdemeanor counts of larceny.
The West Jefferson Police Department would like to thank the Ashe county sheriff's office and the public for its assistance and cooperation throughout the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming as investigators continue to gather information.

The Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance involving the stolen commercial equipment. Investigators are seeking information from anyone who may have been approached by an individual attempting to sell a dump trailer, asphalt sealing equipment, or commercial parking lot striping and paint equipment. Anyone with information regarding these items, or who has been contacted about their sale, is urged to contact the Police Department. Any information provided may assist investigators and will be handled appropriately.
