Jim Vruggink’s journey through the world of sports has been defined by dedication, excellence, and a lifelong commitment to telling the stories of athletes, teams, and the games they love. Born on July 18, 1948, in Zeeland, Michigan, Vruggink built a remarkable career that earned him induction into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame on June 22, 2025, in West Lafayette, Indiana, as a Region 4 Merit inductee.
A graduate of Hudsonville High School in Michigan, Vruggink continued his education at Central Michigan University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in 1970. During his college years, he served as sports editor of CMU Life, worked as a student assistant sports information director, and gained valuable experience with the Mt. Pleasant Daily Times News. His passion for journalism and sports communications became the foundation for a career that would impact collegiate athletics for more than five decades.
Vruggink’s professional path took him to some of the nation’s most respected athletic programs. He began his career as sports editor at the Ypsilanti Press before serving as assistant sports information director at the University of Michigan. He later became sports information director at Northwestern University before arriving at Purdue University, where he spent the final 37 years of his career. At Purdue, he served as Sports Information Director from 1982-1986, Athletic Public Relations Director from 1986-2001, and later Director of Special Projects, retiring on August 31, 2019, after 52 years in sports publicity.
Throughout his career, Vruggink’s influence reached far beyond the press box. He coordinated Heisman Trophy campaigns for Purdue standouts Jim Everett, Mike Alstott, and Drew Brees, helping showcase their accomplishments on a national stage. His expertise also took him to major international sporting events, including serving as press chief for baseball at the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis and as press information manager for baseball at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
His outstanding contributions to sports information and communications earned him numerous honors. Vruggink was inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame in 2004, becoming only the second Boilermaker and eighth Big Ten representative to receive that distinction. He also received the CoSIDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020, the Scoop Hudgens Lifetime SID Award in 2002, the NIT-CoSIDA Presidential Citation in 1997, and the Sigma Chi Seven Lights Award in 2023, among many other recognitions.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Vruggink dedicated himself to service, mentorship, and community involvement. He served as president of CoSIDA from 1996-97 and spent years helping lead the organization. He also guided and encouraged countless student assistants who went on to careers in sports information, athletics administration, journalism, marketing, and related fields. His commitment to developing others became one of the defining marks of his legacy.
Away from athletics, Vruggink made a lasting impact through his involvement in faith, community, and service organizations. He was a member, elder, and greeter coordinator at Covenant Church in West Lafayette, a member of the John Purdue Club and Purdue President’s Council, served on the executive board of the Gale Sayers Center, and advised multiple student organizations. He also served as executive director of the National Football Foundation’s Joe Tiller Chapter of Northwest Indiana from 2004-2024.
Jim Vruggink’s induction into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame celebrates more than a career in sports publicity—it honors a lifetime of leadership, storytelling, mentorship, and service. Through his work at Purdue and throughout the sports world, he helped preserve the history of football and college athletics while inspiring generations of professionals who followed in his footsteps.
