In observance of Labor Day, all City of West Lafayette offices will be closed on Monday, September 7. Regular business hours will resume Tuesday, September 8.

Trash, recycling, and yard waste collection:

-No collection on Monday, September 7.
-Monday’s route will be collected Tuesday, September 8, as crews run a double collection route.

Please have your toters and materials at the curb by 7 a.m. Tuesday.

West Lafayette Fire Department's newest firefighters are almost ready for graduation! Please join us on September 11 as we celebrate their hard work. See the details below. ⬇️⬇️

On May 12, we introduced you to WLFD’s newest probationary firefighters. Since then, they’ve completed their final day of live-fire training and have continued working toward the certifications required to serve with the West Lafayette Fire Department.

Throughout the academy, the recruits have completed training in:
• Hazmat Awareness and Operations
• Firefighter I and II
• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
• Driver Operator General

Their journey has been marked by dedication, hard work, and countless hours of hands-on training. Now, they’re just days away from an important milestone: graduation and being sworn in to serve the West Lafayette community.

Community members are invited to join us for the West Lafayette Fire Department Academy Graduation & Swearing-In Ceremony and help celebrate our 12 newest firefighters.

Earlier this summer, the City of West Lafayette asked community members to review initial concepts and share their priorities for a potential Early Childhood Education Center. Feedback was collected during the first Community Engagement Session and through the Virtual Input Session.

The project team has reviewed that feedback, along with input from early childhood education providers and other community stakeholders, and used it to identify a conceptual direction for further exploration.

Now, we're bringing that work back to the community.

At this session, we'll show how community feedback helped inform the conceptual direction now being explored. You'll have an opportunity to review and provide additional input on the updated site plan orientation; the building's overall size, shape, layout,
and placement; potential exterior and interior themes for finishes and features; and other design elements.

This is not the end of the public input process. Your feedback will help the project team understand what elements are favored, what should be reconsidered, and what should be explored further.

The project remains in the planning and design phase, and the viability of the potential site continues to be evaluated. The concepts and materials presented on September 2 are not final decisions on the location or building design.

We asked. We listened. Now, we're coming back to show you how community input is informing the work - and to ask what you think about where it is headed.

WL Connection Spotlight: Street and Sanitation Q&A

With Purdue students returning and more people settling into off-campus housing, it’s a good time to review a few City trash collection reminders.

Below are answers to some common questions our Street and Sanitation team receives.

Why can’t I place an extra bag on top of my toter?

All bags must fit inside the toter with the lid fully closed. Bags placed on top can fall into the street, create safety hazards, or make their way into storm drains.

Why can’t lithium batteries go in the trash?

Lithium batteries can cause fires when damaged or compacted inside garbage trucks. Please take them to an appropriate battery recycling location or collection event.

Why is there a limit of one extra item per week?

Our crews serve more than 6,000 households each week. Collection limits help manage capacity, keep crews on schedule, and provide safe, efficient service throughout the City.

Last night, August 25, Mayor Erin R. Easter joined local leaders and community members at the Drug-Free Coalition of Tippecanoe County’s Overdose Remembrance & Awareness Event.

The evening was an opportunity to remember those lost to overdose, support those struggling with addiction, and recognize the families and friends whose lives have also been affected.

Mayor Easter joined Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski, Tippecanoe County Commissioner Tracy Brown, and Tippecanoe County Sheriff Bob Goldsmith in reading and signing a proclamation recognizing Overdose Awareness Day.

One of the most meaningful moments of the evening was the unveiling of an interactive remembrance mural. Guests were invited to write the name of someone impacted by addiction on a paper butterfly and add it to the mural.

Thank you to the Drug-Free Coalition of Tippecanoe County and the many community organizations working each day to provide resources, support, and hope throughout Tippecanoe County.

Understanding WLPD's Use of Automated License Plate Readers

Presentation + Q&A

Questions and concerns about license plate reader technology have increased locally and nationally, particularly around privacy, data collection, information sharing, and the appropriate use of technology by law enforcement.

The West Lafayette Police Department is hosting a public information session to provide a clear look at how WLPD uses Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology - including
what vehicle information the cameras capture, what they do not, when officers may search ALPR information, how the information can assist an investigation, and the safeguards and limitations governing its use.

Chief Adam Ferguson will walk attendees through the system using screenshots and his own vehicle as a case study. The discussion will also address data retention, authorized information sharing, search logging and review, and why an ALPR alert alone is not
treated as proof of criminal activity.

A representative from Flock Safety will attend as a technical resource and participate in the Q&A.

- This is not a sales presentation for Flock Safety.

- This is not an announcement of an expansion of WLPD's ALPR program.

- This is not a live demonstration involving community members or searches of their vehicles.

- And it is not intended to suggest that questions or concerns about law-enforcement technology are unreasonable.

At the heart of this discussion is an important principle: civil rights and public safety are not competing interests.

The goal is transparency and education. Questions are encouraged.

On Saturday, August 22, Mayor Erin R. Easter joined community leaders at the closing ceremony for Boiler Gold Rush (BGR) to welcome Purdue University’s newest Boilermakers.

BGR helps incoming students get acquainted with campus, meet new people, find their classes, and learn about resources available at Purdue and throughout the West Lafayette community.

Mayor Easter shared memories from her own time at Purdue and encouraged students to make friends, create memories, and try new things during their college experience.
