hing proper etiquette skills. One of the best gifts a parent can give a child is the knowledge of solid social skills. Learning to be courteous and polite are life skills that are carried through to adulthood and can open many doors along the way. Dining skills are often the trickiest and most difficult to teach because the modern family is constantly on the run. Now you can turn to Southern Etiquette Consultants to train your children in social and dining knowledge. The expertise of table manners and social graces will boost a child’s self-confidence and create a positive image, enabling them to feel at ease and excel as they journey through life.

When having a meal with someone, one of the most inconsiderate things you can do is spend time on your cell phone. You should never have it sitting on the table, check it, or worse, take a call in the middle of a conversation (unless it's an emergency, in which case you should excuse yourself). Your phone should always be put away, and even better, on silent so it doesn't disrupt your time. At the end of the day, the only talking you should be doing is to the person in front of you.

As the New Year starts, we want to wish everyone a fabulous 2014 - and give you four simple etiquette reminders to practice throughout the year.

Always be: Kind. Whether you offer to help someone with their bags or pay someone a compliment, kindness will always leave an impression and can make someone's day.

Always be: Gracious. Writing a hand-written thank you note or sending flowers - nothing is more appreciated than a personal touch.

Always be: Considerate. It's important to consider others feelings, and simple gestures - such as saying 'excuse me' or going out of your way to make someone feel comfortable at a party where they don't know anyone - these type of actions produce more gratitude than you know.

Always be: Polite. Saying 'please', 'thank you', etc. - showing basic manners will take you farther than most anything else in life.

Happy New Year All!

Holiday time is all about giving...and receiving. Make sure your children learn to appreciate both. For Giving: take your children shopping to pick out the gift, that way they will feel like they chose it - and then, allow them to physically hand the gift to the recipient. For Receiving: make sure they say thank after they receive the gift, and again once they have opened it. Even if they do not like the gift, they need to come up with at least one positive thing to say about it.

This week is Halloween, so don't forget your trick-or-treating etiquette! If the lights are on, it's safe to assume people are home and giving out treats! Don't knock or ring the doorbell more than twice, and only take one piece of candy per house. Remember to say thank you, and always stay on sidewalks and/or pathways to avoid cars. If a house is dark, do not go and ring the bell or knock - they are either not home or not giving out candy. And last, always make sure to go in groups, and don't trick-or-treat after 9pm. Happy Halloween All!

The holiday season is a huge time for sending and receiving cards. As a rule, when you receive a holiday card from someone you didn't send one to, reciprocation is optional. You can send one, of course, but you can always wait a few weeks and then write that person a letter. Or, call the person to thank them for such a thoughtful note.

The mother of one of our students, Rhett Jenkins (age 5), received this wonderful 'Praise Report' from his kindergarten teacher - along with her sentiments on how thrilled she is with what Southern Etiquette Consultants has taught him. This is what makes it all worthwhile :)

PRAISE REPORT:

Rhett Jenkins:
Mrs. Arnett came into my classroom to teach Spanish this morning. Rhett immediately goes to get her a chair to sit in and places it near where she always sits in the circle for Spanish time. Rhett...my little gentleman!!! It is so heart warming to see that chivalry is indeed not dead! He is always quick to use good manners. He always replies with a "yes, ma'am", "no ma'am", please or thank you. He looks for opportunities to help his fellow classmates and teachers with such style and grace. Also, I love that it's rubbing off on his classmates!!! They've begun to notice him getting tickets for certain behaviors, and they are copying it. Yay! Polly, thanks for raising such a sweet, confident little gentleman!

Fall is upon us, and so is the start of wedding season! For anyone recently married that wonders how long you have to send thank you notes - the general rule is 3 months. If it's been longer than that, go ahead and try to get them out as quickly as possible. Never send an email or make an announcement via social media. The thank you should always come in the form of a hand written letter.
