Throughout the late 1800s about four miles east-southeast of West Liberty on an old hill known to locals as Mount Tabor, a farmer had used a specific low spot on his property to keep his livestock watered and cool throughout the hot summer days. This spot held quite a bit of water, and gradually kept growing outwards, deeper, and was said to be holding “hundreds of barrels worth of water”. Something changed one night, and by the morning of August 17, 1897, all of that water had disappeared. The farmer and farmhands grew very curious. It was too quick for evaporation, even by August’s standards, and unlikely that it all just soaked into their long-standing holding spot in the ground. It was decided that it had to have sunk into the ground, likely through the lowest point, and a seventeen-year-old farm hand began to dig. He dug down a few feet and struck limestone, found a crack, and lowered himself down in. Just like that, he became the first living thing inside what would become Ohio Caverns.

At Ohio Caverns, we always enjoy the cavern, but we also enjoy our jobs AND the people we work with!

We try to do multiple activities with our staff after hours, as we feel it creates a stronger bond for the whole team, plus more great memories of our busy summers.

We are very excited to announce our new event, "Discovery Sunday" at Ohio Caverns!

We are celebrating our 1897 discovery in style, offering unique tours, packages, activities, and freebies all day on Sunday August 16!

What is offered:
The Discovery Sunday Tour Package, guests will receive both Summer cavern tours, and more!

The Historic Tour will be a Special, One-Day-Only, Lantern-Lit Tour, where each guest will be provided a lantern to light their way through the caverns. Lanterns can be just used for the tour, OR purchased to keep as an add-on to the experience online or in-person! Guests will then enjoy the beauty and awe-inspiring sights of the Natural Wonder Tour.
Guests with Discovery Sunday Tour Package tickets also receive a FREE Gem Mining Bag with each ticket!

Other Details:
-State-Geologist Garry Getz will be on-site assisting with Gem Mining identification and a hands-on rock and mineral table.
-The Central Ohio Cave Grotto will be here doing demos and activities with guests.
