The School of Social Work has built a program around the ideals of advancing human rights and social justice. It is expressly our intention to produce practitioners whose current and future work is grounded in a commitment to human rights, and to that end, the United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Rights is a central hub around which all else is connected.

🍭🍰Parting is such sweet sorrow - especially today as we said goodbye to our Acting Dean, Dr. Leah Lazzaro. 🍪🧁

Did you know Leah began her journey with the School of Social Work in 2002 as a student in our MSW program? She was even a Graduate Assistant in our office! 👩‍🎓🌟

In 2006 she was hired as the Coordinator of Field and Professional Education and so began her 18 year tenure as an administrator of our program. During that time Leah poured her heart and soul into everything she did which included (but is not limited to): running workshops, handing out t-shirts, placing field students, assembling centerpieces, teaching courses, organizing the School calendar, hiring adjuncts, wheeling boxes full of folders for events across campus (often in the rain), managing the School budget, serving snacks to students, mentoring staff, manually approving every email that gets sent to School listservs, helping to found Growing Together As Allies and the DSW program, changing lightbulbs in the office, and stepping in as the Dean!

From her MSW orientation as a new student to her goodbye party today as Acting Dean - Leah has truly done it all in the School of Social Work. For the past 22 years she has been part of our program in one way or another and McAllan Hall will feel very strange without her. 💔

We are sorry to see her go but are so proud to see our hawk fly the nest for great things! We can’t wait to see her at the next alumni event. 🦅💙🤍

🌟 Today marked a bittersweet moment as we bid farewell to an amazing member of our community, Dr. Robin Mama. 📚 Her last day teaching was filled with heartfelt moments as faculty, staff, and students came together to surprise her with a touching tribute. 🌸 As she walked through a lined hallway adorned with flowers and applause, we couldn’t help but reflect on the profound impact she’s had on countless lives. 💼 Wishing Dr. Mama all the best in her well-deserved retirement. Your legacy will forever inspire us.

Yesterday we had the honor of hosting international speakers brought by our adjunct professor Ausirys Alviz, MSW, LCSW. Coming from Guatemala for the United Nations Forum on Indigenous Issues, Maria and Archie were invited to talk about the important work social workers do internationally to alleviate poverty and improve living conditions in Guatemala. Social workers play an important role in education, health care, nutrition, and other social protections. They were also accompanied by another great speaker , MSW, LCSW and CEO of , speaking on the importance of social workers practicing self care and empathy. Introspection and preventative self care help social workers be better professionals and human beings to one another and to clients.

Second to last day of Social Work Month & it’s our last 🚨Staff Highlight🚨 is here!

Christa Hogan is a staple to our program & can be credited for the idea of a post a day during this month to celebrate our social workers! 👏 Let’s hear about her!

“Christa Hogan is a MUSSW Lecturer, the BSW Program director, and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She was also a BSW student here many, many years ago! Christa loves being a part of the Monmouth community and feels best in the classroom teaching her students about the impact of Social Work. Christa loves building relationships with her students, advising and mentoring, collaborating with her colleagues, and teaching the next generation of social work leaders!”

We love having you on the team, Professor Hogan! 💙🦅🤍

3 days left of Social Work Month & we want to brag about more of our students!!

We have a hoppy🐣service project to share!

“At MUSSW, our students are invested in not just learning the content in their courses but also living out our SW values. One way we do this is by engaging in acts of service as a class. In our HBSE classes, not only did our undergrads volunteer with older adults, but they and our MSW students created cards during the winter holidays to send to isolated older adults. In the Family Violence class, students gathered together to create spring baskets for families served by a local agency that works with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Thank you to everyone who donated supplies so that we could do this together and happy social work month to all the students who helped with these projects.”

Great job spreading the hawk love💙🦅🤍!

Sharing a 🚨BSW Highlight🚨 for your Tuesday!

Senior Undergraduate Xena Vasquez-Bravo will be graduating this May👏 Let’s hear where she has been spending her time this last year🤔

“I am currently interning at Operation HOPE where they provide equine assisted psychotherapy to individuals that are suffering from depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health issues. When the clients allow for me to be in sessions, I am lucky to observe what the therapist looks at when it comes to horse behaviors and how it becomes the metaphor of the individual’s life. When I am not at the farm, I work on updating their social media on the daily or write blogs about mental health issues. My overall goal in social work is to become an international social worker to work with communities and their policies.”

Great job, Xena! 🤍🦅💙

Happy Monday, Happy 🚨MSW Highlight🚨!

Dana Stephens will be graduating this spring with her masters in social work🤩! Dana has spent her last year working hard at her internship…but let her tell you about it👏

“My internship is currently at Care One in Holmdel. My duties there is to do the BIMS/PHQ9s to assess for cognitive function and depression scale for subacute and long term care residents. I also do the social work assessment with the residents or the family of the resident. I do care conferences with families to give an update about the progress they’re making. I assist with discharge planning with my supervisor.”

You’re doing great work, Dana🤍🦅💙

A Sunday 🚨Staff Highlight🚨 sounds good to me!

Professor Sanjana Ragudaran is a staple here at Monmouth🤩but let’s hear from her!

“This month, as we reflect on our profession, NASW’s theme of empowerment is timely. We endeavor to empower our clients, and now we need to do the same for ourselves. History indicates the importance of union representation with regards to income, workload, and health and safety. As a macro social worker who is the field organizer for our faculty union, I understand the importance of this first hand especially during our contract negotiations. We need to secure salary equity across disciplines and gender. This is imperative as we celebrated International Women’s Day this month too, with the knowledge that we still do not have equity on many fronts. Our profession needs to unionize. When this happens, our wages will increase and we will experience better workplace conditions.”

You’re doing amazing work, Sanjana! We love having you on our team🤍🦅💙
