Congratulations Mr. Garman! 🇺🇸VETERAN OF THE MONTH🇺🇸
Wheatland American Legion Post 432 is most honored to announce Vietnam War Veteran William "Bill" Garman as our June 2026 Veteran of the Month.
In April of 1968 Bill Garman, after receiving his draft notice, he ultimately decided to enlist in the U.S. Army. After completing basic training at Fort Jackson, SC it was onto Fort Monmouth, NJ the home of the Army Signal Corp, for formal training in communications. Bill became an instructor at the school until the spring of 1970.
At this time, the Army needed Corporal Garman's knowledge and leadership in Cu Chi Vietnam. As a member of the 125th Signal Battalion of the 25th Infantry Division Bill's duties included keeping the lines of communication open between active fighting units.
One of the things Cu Chi was known for were the infamous underground tunnels that the Vietcong used extensively especially during the 1968 Tet Offensive.
In April 1971 promoted to Sergeant Garman, his enlistment came up and Bill was sent home and landed in Pittsburgh on his birthday in 1971.
Some of the medals and ribbons he was awarded during enlistment are, Vietnam Service Medal. Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct, National Defense, Army Commendation Medal, Expert M16 and M14 rifle ribbons.
Upon returning home Bill worked at Sawhill as a pipethreader and inspector.
He and his wife Holly have been married since 1968. They have 2 sons William Jr. and Alan. Along with 2 grandchildren.
Bill served as an Elder and Trustee for his home parish The Presbyterian Church of West Middlesex. He is a 30 yr member of the church choir. Bill is a board member for Haywood Cemetery and is the current Chaplain and former Quartermaster of the West Middlesex VFW Post 6233. Bill is also a long time member of our Honor Guard.
To note, the Garman family is steep in tradition for serving Our Country. Bill's forefathers served in the War of 1812, Civil War at Gettysburg, WWI and WWII.
Bill is quite an accomplished carpenter and woodworker. He completely remodeled his former parsonage home built in the 1800's.
Congratulations on your Veteran of the Month selection and thank you Sgt Garman for your service and dedication to our Country, State and Community. Welcome Home.
