Punxsutawney Phil predicts the weather, but Meadowcroft’s groundhog uncovered history.

On Nov. 12, 1955, a curious groundhog at Meadowcroft Rockshelter unearthed more than just dirt.

After noticing a groundhog pulling unusual objects from the hole, local farmer Albert Miller decided to dig deeper. What he uncovered included pieces of burnt bone, flint flakes, freshwater mussel shells, and an intact flint knife.

The discoveries confirmed Miller’s long-held belief that Native people once used the Rockshelter as a campsite – and sparked formal excavations that would later reveal evidence of human life in North America dating back 19,000 years.

Sometimes the biggest discoveries come from the smallest (and furriest) helpers. 🦫✨

that the Miller One-Room School, now part of Meadowcroft’s 19th-century village, served students in Washington County until 1921?

Pennsylvania’s 1834 school law created districts in every township, ward, and borough to ensure all children had access to an education. In those early years, classes ran from May to August and November to April, giving farm kids time to pitch in during the harvest season.
