For families facing food insecurity, school meals help children arrive at school ready to learn while helping families stretch their food budgets. In Wisconsin, 484,000 students were enrolled in the School Lunch Program.

Hunger Task Force works with schools, community partners and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to strengthen access to school meals and connect families with food assistance.

For Pa Thao and her mother at Maiv Flower Farm in Eau Claire, 25% of their production is dedicated to growing peas, carrots and bell peppers for Hunger Task Force's Connecting Farms to Families program. Through the program, Wisconsin farmers gain a reliable market for fresh produce while emergency food providers gain access to locally grown food for families across the state!

“It feels so good to know that a little farm here in Eau Claire is having an impact across Wisconsin,” Pa says.

Inflation in food prices can hit even harder for people in their 60s and older as they also juggle fixed incomes, health problems and changes in federal law. Experts say the age group is a “forgotten population” when it comes to food insecurity.

As we say “goodbye” to our Community Nutrition summer interns, we asked them to share some lessons learned during their summer with us. Thank you, Jasmine and Jaleyce Oraedu, for your dedication to fighting hunger in Milwaukee!

“One of the most valuable lessons I learned was how small efforts can make a meaningful impact on healthy eating. Activities such as sampling, sharing recipes and promoting Your Plate help people recognize the value of nutritious foods and inspire healthier choices.” ~ Jasmine

“This internship taught me the importance of community. I never realized the impact I was making until people began recognizing me as the intern who shared recipes and food samples. Those interactions showed me how meaningful small connections can be in building trust and encouraging healthy habits.” ~ Jaleyce

Earlier this week, we were grateful to welcome our friends at WC Bradley Co. and Lamplight Farms, home of TIKI Brand Products, back to the Hunger Task Force Farm for another incredible Day of Giving! 💚

Each year, the Lamplight team pauses operations and brings employees together for a day of giving back at The Farm. This year, the team harvested 22,176 pounds of corn, cucumbers and tomatoes and Lamplight made a generous $10,000 donation to our Free & Local mission.

Cover crop season is here. 🌱

As fields begin to rotate out of production at the Hunger Task Force Farm, our farmers drill a cover crop mix of peas and oats to help protect the soil from erosion, hold nutrients in the soil and build plenty of biomass that will ultimately feed the soil’s microbial life and next year’s vegetable crops.

Cover crop management is an important part of how our Farm team cares for the land and works to build healthier, more resilient soils over time.
