West Newton Bridge Rehabilitation Project Begins in Westmoreland County

Uniontown, PA—Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 12 is announcing construction for the West Newton Bridge Rehabilitation Project is scheduled to begin in West Newton Borough, Westmoreland County, Monday, August 31.

Beginning Monday, August 31, daytime single-lane restrictions controlled by flaggers will occur as needed on Water Street from 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM, to accommodate material and equipment deliveries.

Additionally, crews from Joseph B. Faye Construction Company will be performing off-line clearing and grubbing operations.

Drivers should remain alert, obey flaggers, and use caution when traveling through the area. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

This project includes a complete deck replacement as well as replacement and/or repair work on the trusses, sidewalk supports, and substructure. The project will reconstruct and modernize the bridge to meet the safety and mobility needs of the growing region and restore this historic bridge to a state of good repair. In recognition of the 2026 Nation 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance, Westmoreland Food Bank is proud to announce the Third Annual 9/11 Week of Service Food Drive, a county-wide initiative honoring the spirit of service and unity that emerged in the wake of tragedy.

This year, we are proud to say West Newton Borough is a part of this initiative as this event carries special significance as America celebrate its 250th Anniversary!

Stop by the Borough office Monday - Friday from 8:00AM-4:00PM to drop off items for the Westmoreland Food Bank - We will accept items until Friday, September 11th, 2026.

Update:

⚡ POWER OUTAGE UPDATE – WEST NEWTON

We know there are still residents in a portion of West Newton without power. According to West Penn Power, the remaining outages are related to tree damage from the recent weather.

Additional crews have been requested to assist with the situation and the current estimated restoration time is 1:00 PM.

At this time, we do not have specific information identifying which individual residences are still without power.

If you are still without power and need assistance with essential needs while waiting for service to be restored, PA 211 is available to help connect residents with local resources and support.

You can call 211 directly for assistance and information about available resources in your area.

As a volunteer Emergency Management organization, we want to make sure our residents have access to the resources available to them. While we are happy to help point you in the right direction, we are not able to make individual 211 referrals or contact 211 on a resident’s behalf. That’s why we’re sharing this information directly so you can reach out and get connected as quickly as possible.

If you have an immediate need and aren’t sure where to turn, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ll do our best to help bridge you with the appropriate resources.

⚡ POWER OUTAGE UPDATE – WEST NEWTON

West Newton Borough Emergency Management is advising residents that West Penn Power is reporting a power outage affecting portions of West Newton due to inclement weather.

Crews have been notified and are working to restore power. The current estimated restoration time is approximately 5:00 PM.

Portable generators are being used to provide temporary power to traffic signals in affected areas. Please use caution, slow down, and be alert when approaching intersections, as traffic patterns may be impacted.

Residents are reminded to use caution around any downed power lines and to report them to West Penn Power. Please also check on neighbors who may need assistance during the outage.

We will provide additional updates as they become available.
