The results of Ottawa County’s Farmland Preservation Survey are in, and they demonstrate the County is on the same page with local farmers and landowners in its methodology to support local agriculture.

89% of people surveyed think farmland loss is a problem locally and believe it is important to preserve -- a 7% increase since 2019. Respondents were mostly likely to agree farms should be protected through planning and zoning, enhancing the economic viability of farming, succession planning, and by protecting land through agricultural conservation easements.

Ottawa County thanks the Ottawa County Farm Bureau for supporting development of the survey and encouraging farmers and owners of agriculturally zoned property to complete it.

Children and adults alike received an interactive crash course in Ottawa County hydrology from the County’s Be Water Wise team on Aug. 5 at Coopersville Kids Fest. This “aquifer in a box” made by staff Land Use Specialist Andrew Roszowski shows how a thick layer of clay prevents the Marshall aquifer - the source of drinking water for many rural residents - from replenishing itself.

Ottawa County thanks the Coopersville Farm Museum and Event Center for providing the space!
