About the West Point Skeet & Trap Team
Duty, Honor, Country: these values and a commitment to excellence continue to guide cadets as the United States Military Academy marches into its third century of service to the nation as the world’s premier leader development institution. During their four years at West Point, cadets undergo rigorous academic, military, physical, and character development in
preparation to lead soldiers as officers in the U.S. The Skeet & Trap Team falls within the cadet military development program as one of several voluntary marksmanship activities. Cadet team members polish their marksmanship skills, develop a love of the shooting sports, serve as role models and ambassadors for West Point, and become spokespersons for competitive and recreational shotgun shooting. Team members forge lifelong friendships and gain invaluable experience filling important team leadership positions. The team was founded in 1938 by Colonel Charles King (USMA ‘28), who gave his life in the Normandy invasion of June 6, 1944. In the decades since its founding, the Skeet & Trap Team has achieved an enviable record in competitions against collegiate rivals including Navy, Yale, Harvard, George Mason, the University of Vermont, and others. When not competing at the collegiate level, the team regularly shoots against local gun clubs, where the cadets have the opportunity to hone their skills while sharing West Point’s story and mission with the American public they serve. Today the team is recognized as one of the foremost collegiate shotgun teams in the eastern United States, in large part thanks to generous supporters committed to cultivating the next generation of Army shooters.
