Universal Hub: ‘State Sen. Mike Rush (D-Norfolk and Suffolk) had agreed to his one and only candidate forum with primary challenger Persis Yu last night, but organizers say he canceled at the last minute because he had a more important event to attend: To give a novelty check representing $50,000 in state funding to North Walpole Fish and Game for programs for veterans and children with special needs.’

For the record, we do not question the value of this organization or funding. But we definitely question the urgency of needing to hand out a novelty check and skipping a candidate forum that Senator Rush had agreed to at this specific date and time at his request.

Neither Congressman Lynch nor State Senator Mike Rush appeared at last night’s candidates forum in Dedham to face their respective challengers Patrick Roath and Persis Yu. Senator Rush backed out at the last minute and Congressman Lynch refused to attend. This continues a pattern of both incumbents ducking their serious opponents and refusing to speak to constituents. At a time when our democracy is under such threat, it’s particularly galling that Lynch and Rush are acting in their own ways to undermine our local democratic values. These seats belong to voters, not any specific elected official or individual. This behavior by both incumbents is not the norm - we have seen State Senators Collins and Brownsberger in Boston and Congressman Neal in Western MA attend debates and forums with their challengers and voters this year. We hope voters will consider this anti-democratic behavior by Congressman Lynch and State Senator Rush on Election Day next Tuesday, September 1st.

‘In what Persis Yu, Democratic party primary candidate for state senate, hoped would be a discussion with incumbent Mike Rush about district issues, turned out to be a presentation of Yu’s affordability plan when Rush did not respond to her invitation to debate and was a no-show for the event.

Yu spoke to about 50 attendees at the Aug. 13 gathering at the Stratford Street United Church and spoke about her “affordability agenda” which includes addressing costs at the state level through universal free childcare, auditing utility companies and making corporations accountable to drive down costs in housing and strengthening worker’s wages.’

UPDATE 2: Senator Rush did not appear at the forum despite organizers choosing this date at his request. No explanation was provided for his last-minute cancellation. So that means no debate or forum between himself and Persis Yu this campaign because he refused to.

Senator Mike Rush and challenger Persis Yu will finally appear together at a forum this Thursday Aug. 27 at 7:00 pm, Dedham Middle School, 70 Whiting Ave, hosted by the Dedham and Westwood Democratic Town Committees and including congressional challenger Patrick Roath.

We remain disappointed that Senator Rush is only now appearing before voters on stage with Ms. Yu, after her repeated calls for debates went unanswered by the senator for months and when mail-in voting and early voting are well underway.

It appears Congressman Stephen Lynch won’t be there. The congressman also refused to meet his challenger for months before finally meeting Mr. Roath on stage recently in Weymouth.

Elected officials should be unafraid to face opponents and should be willing to answer questions from voters. That’s what democracy is about and the minimum we should expect from anyone representing us or wanting to represent us in any office.
