Obituary

In his lifetime, C. Bruce Brown was an Airman in the U.S. Air Force, a basketball player, a teacher, an entrepreneur, and a dedicated public servant. He passed on December 20, 2012 at the age of 75.

Mr. Brown was born in Olean, NY, on June 9, 1937, to Woodrow and Doris (Lanphere) Brown. He spent most of his childhood living in Shinglehouse, PA. His early life was busy, living abroad in Germany, moving to Texas and Oklahoma, and then living with his Grandparents in Bells Run and Shinglehouse.

Mr. Brown joined the U.S. Air Force and ended up stationed at Pease Air Force Base in Newington NH. While in the Air Force, he earned his degree from the University of New Hampshire. After completing his studies at UNH and leaving the Air Force, he became an educator at Amesbury High School with concentrations in Special Education and coaching basketball.

Mr. Brown then moved into the business world, working for Prudential Insurance Company for 25 years. Mr. Brown then started his own marketing company, Atlantic Advertising Media, which worked primarily with YMCA’s throughout New England, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Mr. Brown has been a proud resident of Newburyport, MA, for the past several decades. Since his arrival, he has served as a City Councilor (17 years) and as a volunteer serving on many boards and commissions. Among them: The Haverhill YMCA, The Salvation Army, Newburyport Housing Authority, The Olde Newbury Historical Society, Friends of Plum Island Lighthouse, Yankee Homecoming Committee and as part of the Newburyport Waterfront Trust. Mr. Brown was always happiest at his home on the top of Plum Island with his wife Peggy and his dogs.

Mr. Brown was a proud supporter and fundraiser for the Jimmy Fund, donating over the years to help kids in need. It wasn’t uncommon to be somewhere thousands of miles away from home to hear someone say, “Hey Bruce”. If a man is judged by the company he keeps, then Bruce would be the richest and luckiest man on earth.

Survivors include his wife Peggy Kennedy Brown of Newburyport, MA; his sister Linda Brown Dixon of Newark, NY; two sons and their wives: Scott P Brown and Gail Huff Brown of Wrentham, MA, and Washington, DC; Bruce and Michelle Browne of Wolcott, CT, and daughter Robyn Brown of Scarborough, ME; two step children and their spouses: Tracy Ann Harrington and Christian Miller of Amesbury, MA; Todd and Amy Harrington of Bennington, VT. Bruce is survived by nine Grandchildren: Joshuah Heath and his wife Jennifer, Emily Heath, Kyle Turin, Ayla Brown, Arianna Brown, Gabrielle Browne, Parker Browne, Devin Browne, and Taylor Harrington. He also leaves several Nieces, Nephews and cousins.

Wake: December 23, 2012 Rogers Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, MA 01950. 2PM to 6PM

Funeral: December 24, 2012 Central Congregational Church, 14 Titcomb Street, Newburyport, MA 01950 at 10AM
