We had a great training tonight with members from Rutland City, Rutland Town, and Chittenden Fire Departments. This building, which is slated for demolition, provided a great venue for forcible entry, wall breaching, even ceiling pulling to simulate accessing concealed fires. Thanks to everyone who attended and shared knowledge and skill instruction with one another.

Tonight we refreshed our vehicle extrication skills. Modern vehicle design continues to challenge rescuers with things like high strength metals and bodies designed to absorb energy by crumpling during a crash. We practice to be ready when needed.

***PRESS RELEASE - MISSING HIKER***

INCIDENT: 25RUC005811
DATE: October 14, 2025, at 2116 Hours
LOCATION: Birdseye Mountain, Ira

INVESTIGATING OFFICER: Deputy Alan Frasier

ASSISTING OFFICERS: Corporal Gregory Ricketts, Corporal Justin Cram and K9 Crash, Deputy Donald Sweet, Provisional Deputy Matthew Grover, Lieutenant Andrew Cross

DESCRIPTION:
On the above date and time, Deputies with the Rutland County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to a report of a missing hiker on Birdseye Mountain in the Town of Ira. Deputies immediately responded to the area and initiated search efforts. After extensive search efforts by multiple agencies, the hiker was located on a ledge near the Bird Mountain Peak.

Rescue Inc. secured the hiker and brought him back to safety at approximately 9:00AM on 10/15/25 with minor, non life threatening injuries.

We would like to thank the West Rutland Fire Department, Ira Fire Department, Vermont Fish and Game, Regional Ambulance Service, and Rescue Inc, as well as several residents in the area for their assistance.

Without the skills, professionalism, selflessness, and local knowledge of our community partners and our residents, we would not see the positive outcome of many incidents, including this one.

🚨🚨As a reminder plan ahead for all possibilities when hiking; have a plan, pack extra gear, food, and water, and insure that your cell phone and flashlights are fully charged. 🚨🚨
