The Specially Marked Patrol Vehicle (SMPV) Program

For over 40 years, the CHP has used SMPVs to tackle specific traffic safety challenges. This month, the CHP is deploying the next generation of SMPVs across the state.
These vehicles come in a variety of distinctive colors and have a version of the traditional CHP vehicle markings in sharp contrast on the doors.

Check out this video from Commissioner Sean Duryee, in which he discusses the mission of these SMPVs: to stop reckless and dangerous driving.

The hosted its first Model Year Police Vehicle Evaluation and the Academy the weekend of November 2-3, 2024. Representatives from came together, along with 53 law enforcement agencies to produce a successful event. Our CHP EVOC instructors tested gas powered and electric vehicles on I5 in Yolo County, our high speed track, pursuit course, and for high altitude testing in Truckee. Thank you to the safety vendors for sharing their product knowledge and innovations. A special thank you to for catering, Thank you to all those who attended. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and we’ll see you next year!

Join the California Highway Patrol's commercial unit as a Motor Carrier Specialist (MCS) and play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of our roadways! 🌟

As an MCS, you'll:
🔍 Travel within your division to inspect motor carriers.
✅ Ensure compliance with safety, maintenance, and operational regulations.
📝 Verify drivers' records for controlled substances and hazardous materials.
💡 Provide recommendations for procedural enhancements.
🚍 Inspect a variety of vehicles, from school buses to semi-trailers, to safeguard our roadways from unsafe commercial vehicles.
