We’re proud to support our law enforcement partners. The West Sacramento Police Department will continue working collaboratively to ensure our community is not a haven for those committing crimes, whether those crimes happen here or elsewhere.
Great work by the investigators and agencies involved in bringing this case to resolution.

On August 29th at 11:12 pm, Deputies responded to a private event at the Los Banos fairgrounds for a report of a shooting. Deputies located Kody Pena, a security guard, deceased at the scene. Detectives identified the suspect as 21-year-old Gabriel Angel Salas of Sacramento. Our investigators worked closely with the West Sacramento Police Department and Yolo Regional SWAT Team during this investigation. Early this morning, Salas turned himself in to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and was booked into the Sacramento County Jail for murder. We are currently working to extradite Salas to Merced County. We want to thank the public for their help providing useful information to our Detectives as well as the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, West Sacramento Police Department and the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this case.

The Yolo County SWAT Team will be conducting scheduled training today, Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 817 West Capitol Avenue.
Community members in the area may notice an increased police presence, including officers in tactical equipment and police vehicles. This is a planned training exercise and there is NO threat to the public.
These realistic training exercises help our officers maintain the skills and readiness needed to respond safely and effectively during critical incidents.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as our officers train to better serve and protect our community. 💙

🐾 It’s National Dog Day, and we’re celebrating our top dogs, Cash and Maverick! These four-legged members of the WSPD team make countless contributions every day, helping keep their partners, Officer Gill and Officer Montez, as well as our entire West Sacramento community safe.

We’re grateful for their hard work, dedication, and, of course, those wagging tails! The undisputed best co- workers around!🐕

Please join us in welcoming Community Service Officer Liliana “Lili” Talamantes to the West Sacramento Police Department! Chief Strange officially swore Lili in on Monday, and we are excited to have her joining our team full time.
Lili is a longtime West Sacramento resident who already has a strong connection to our community. She brings valuable experience from her time with West Sacramento Parks and Recreation as well as our Traffic Operations Team. She is also currently attending Sacramento State.
We look forward to watching Lili’s continued growth and commitment to serving and supporting the West Sacramento community!

⚾️ BASEBALL TRAFFIC UPDATE

Athletics baseball is back at Sutter Health Park this week as they host the Minnesota Twins and the Baltimore Orioles. That means extra traffic around the ballpark on game days.

🚗 If you’re traveling through the area, please plan for delays, follow the direction of traffic officers, and pay attention to posted parking and traffic-control signage. A little patience goes a long way in keeping everyone moving safely.

K9 Maverick is officially 3 years old today! 🥳🐕‍🦺 His partner, Officer Montez, is making sure Maverick gets plenty of extra head scratches and birthday love. ❤️
But don’t let the birthday celebration fool you, Maverick is still out there hard at work, keeping our community safe! 💙

Community Information Request:
On November 23, 2024, at approximately 7:40 a.m., a homicide occurred at a homeless encampment along the railroad tracks behind 975 F St. in West Sacramento.
The 46-year-old male victim sustained significant injuries and was transported to UC Davis Medical Center, where he later died as a result of his injuries.
The West Sacramento Police Department is seeking information from the community regarding this ongoing homicide investigation. If you have any information, no matter how small it may seem, please contact the West Sacramento Police Department Investigations Unit at (916) 617-5056.
Your information could help investigators bring answers to this case. Please share this post to help us reach anyone who may have information.
