We were happy to help out with the City of South St. Paul, Minnesota Superhero Camp this week!

The weather was perfect for some summertime fun, and campers had a great time cooling off while our firefighters sprayed water and helped everyone beat the heat.

Thank you to all the campers, staff, and volunteers who made it such a fun event. We always enjoy the opportunity to connect with our community and help create memorable experiences for local kids.

Our firefighters responded to an unusual call today when a baby raccoon found itself stranded atop a utility pole. After several patient attempts, crews were able to safely coax the little one back down to the ground and reunite it with its siblings.

The family of raccoons was then safely relocated to a nearby park, where they could continue their adventures together.

Great work by our firefighters, whose commitment to helping others extends to all members of our community—even the furry ones! 🦝🚒❤️

On June 2, 1968, Jay Bloemers of the City of South St. Paul, Minnesota Fire Department made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the community. A firefighter for six years, Firefighter Bloemers lost his life while operating at the Coast-To-Coast fire at 121 North Concord Street. While assigned to mop-up operations and extinguishing remaining embers, welds on the aerial ladder he was working from failed, causing the ladder to collapse. Firefighter Bloemers was pronounced dead on arrival at Ramsey Hospital. Today, we pause to honor Firefighter Bloemers’ service, sacrifice, and memory.

Today, after more than 28 years of selfless service, we extend a heartfelt thank-you and farewell to Fire Chief Mark Juelfs. Throughout his career, Chief Juelfs served our two communities as a Firefighter/EMT, Engineer, Lieutenant, Captain, Fire Marshal, and, for the past seven years, Fire Chief. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to public service have left a lasting impact on the department and the communities we proudly serve.

Check out some of the great work our firefighters are doing through South Metro IAFF Local 724!

Did you know the South Metro Fire Department’s Battalion Chiefs, Captains, Firefighters, Engineers, and Fire Inspectors are all part of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF)? They are a combined Union of Professional Firefighters called IAFF Local 724!

Did you know that the IAFF and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) have partnered for over 70 years, raising money for the MDA through the Fill the Boot campaign?

What is Fill the Boot?
Since 1954, Firefighters across the country have collected critical funds in the community – one dollar at a time – as part of the Fill the Boot program to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The partnership between MDA and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) began when the IAFF signed a proclamation designating MDA as its charity of choice, vowing to continue raising awareness and funds to ensure effective treatments and therapies are found. The dollars raised through Fill the Boot fund MDA’s mission of empowering people living with neuromuscular disease to live longer, more independent lives.

Some of our Local 724 members will be walking in the Explore West St. Paul Days Parade on Saturday, June 6th, collecting donations for Muscular Dystrophy. Their goal this year is to raise $15,000 in donations. If you can’t donate in person, you may use the link below to make a tax-deductible donation. Any amount would be greatly appreciated by IAFF Local 724 and the MDA! Together, let’s make a difference!

Today, we honor Assistant Engineer George Carleton of Engine Company 2, who made the ultimate sacrifice on May 22, 1892. While bravely fighting a fire at the Stock Yard, he fell into the feed elevator flywheel and gave his life in the line of duty. A member of Engine Company 2 for 18 months, George was held in high esteem by his company and community. We remember his courage and dedication.

Over the past two weeks, we have been conducting our Initial Rescue Swimmer Certification course. Recruits go through rigorous training to ensure they're prepared for any water rescue emergency. We’re proud to partner with our neighbors at the Burnsville Fire Department to host these joint training sessions.

Hear from Fire Chief Mike Nelson as he gives an in-depth look at what takes place during these trainings and how important they for our department.
