Last nights EMS drill consisted of member from Vigilant and Seneca Hose who joined forces to drill together. Both departments have new membership and new EMTs who need practice on removing patients out of buildings using a stair chair, utilizing proper stretcher operations along with training on backboard usage and hip fracture packaging.

Joint drills with neighboring departments allow for memberships to familiarize themselves with each another, learn to work with others crew members and helps to familiarize themselves with other departments equipment and apparatus.

Last night, Vigilant hosted their Awards Dinner Celebration. Big shout out to everyone who assisted in making this event such a success. A great time was had by all. Great food, great drinks, great people!

Our top 20 responders were all issued their plaques, Liana Parke was awarded EMS Provider of the Year and Zulmary Cruz was awarded Firefighter of the Year.

With February being Heart Health month, Vigilant conducts their annual CPR class during the month of February. The majority of our membership are CPR certified. All EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) must maintain their CPR status in order to maintain their EMT cards. Vigilant currently has 13 EMTs, 1 CFR (Certified First Responder) and 4 members currently taking an EMT Class.

Attention AFDSNY Members -

The Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York is pleased to offer the Ned Carter Memorial Scholarship Award for High School Seniors.

These scholarships are named in honor of Past President Edward ‘Ned’ Carter, and all deceased past presidents of the Association. In keeping with Ned’s lifelong dedication to community service and helping others, four, onetime $1,500 scholarships will be presented to graduating high school seniors who will be pursuing a career in a community services related discipline.

Who's eligible?

*All applicants MUST be a FIREFIGHTER or, JR FIREFIGHTER/EXPLORER or, be RELATED TO A FIREFIGHTER, or BE RELATED TO A FIREDISTRICT COMMISSIONER, DISTRICT SECRETARY, DISTRICT TREASURER, DISTRICT DEPUTY TREASURER, DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR/MANAGER. The Fire Department/District MUST be a current member in good standing with AFDSNY.

*Applicants MUST be continuing their education after high school at either a two or four year institution of higher education in pursuit of community service related career. This includes but not limited to; fire service, nursing, social work, teaching, health related services, paramedic, etc.

How are winners determined?
•Four (4) awards will be given each year. One award in each quadrant of the state
•Applications will be evaluated by the Scholarship Committee of the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York. Academic achievement and community service will be considered in the selection process.

•Awards will be made directly to the winning recipient (s) upon proof of registration to a two or four year accredited institution of higher education.

•All decisions of the Committee are final.

Tonight Vigilant responded to a single vehicle roll over accident on the 400 Northbound. The person was lucky, they had only minor injuries.

Please be careful on the roads. It may look like it’s only a small amount of slush, but it is slippery underneath.

Scholarship dance is underway! Still time to come on down!!

Wondering what to do this Saturday evening? Tired of staying inside, being bored and feeling this cold? Come on out to our annual Scholarship Dance -doors open at 6 pm.

This event will produce funds for our annual scholarship event, where Vigilant gives students in West Seneca who apply for our scholarship program funds for a higher education.

You may also enjoy some music, get a little exercise from dancing and get warm but also benefit a great cause!!

Congratulations to two of our new members on passing Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations - BEFO which is a 79 hour course which prepares new firefighters to operate on the exterior areas at a fire scene.
Students learn building construction, fire behavior, ground ladders, forcible entry and a wide variety of other operations.
Both firefighters are signed up to move on to Interior Firefighting Operations this Spring.
