Yesterday evening members of Seneca Hose spent the evening honoring and remembering Tyler Schenck.

During this time a memorial was mounted in the apparatus bay to keep the memory of Tyler alive.

A bent NY hook mounted proudly with his name plate. The bent hook is more than just a worn tool with a distinguished bend to it, it’s the token of a story,

On a late night fire alarm call, Tyler Schenck was assigned the riding position of the hook and can, after clearing the incident, the hook may not have been placed correctly back on to the engine, which resulted in it accidentally being left behind in the middle of the roadway.

After returning to quarters the crew noticed the missing tool which prompted a quick return to the scene only to discover it had been run over, creating the distinguished bend. The tool was returned to the station and given the new name, “the Schenck hook”.

In typical Tyler spirit he took the joking well, and swore never to let that happen again.

Today the hook sits proudly displayed, and will continue Tyler’s memory for generations, each member just waiting for someone to ask, “what’s with that bent hook”

Thank you to the members who quickly jumped at the opportunity to make this memorial happen. Also, thank you to Doyle Hose Co. No. 1 for standing by at our Fire Station to allow our members to properly reflect.

It is with great sadness that we notify you of the loss of one of our members, Tyler Schenck, who passed away in an accident last evening.

Tyler was not only a valued and respected member of our organization, but also a member of the Erie County Department of Health, EMS Division; the Erie County Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Services, Hazardous Materials Response Team; and Hamburg EMS, as well as a former member of Reserve Fire Company.

At approximately 2200 hours on August 22, 2026, emergency personnel responded to a single-vehicle motor vehicle accident in the Town of Elma. Members of the Blossom Vol. Fire Company, Spring Brook Fire District #1, Erie County EMS, and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office responded and worked together to manage the incident.

Tyler was described by those who knew and worked alongside him as lovable, lighthearted, and a passionate EMS provider who genuinely cared about everyone he met. During his time serving in the fire and EMS communities, Tyler made a meaningful impact on his coworkers, fellow first responders, and the people he served. His loss will be deeply felt throughout our public safety, fire, and EMS communities. Our deepest condolences go out to the Schenck family, Tyler’s friends, and his fellow members during this incredibly difficult time.

We recognize that the sudden loss of a coworker and fellow first responder can affect each of us differently. Employees are encouraged to support one another and utilize the resources available to them. Confidential assistance is available through:

Seneca Hose Engine 1 responded mutual aid to Reserve this afternoon for the reported shed fire. Enroute a large column of black smoke was visible from the fire station. Crews arrived to find a large garage with heavy fire conditions, being fueled by numerous propane, acetylene, and other chemicals. There were multiple vehicles also burning as well as attached and detached outbuildings.

Crews from all West Seneca Fire Districts used multiple hand lines to bring the fire under control.
