This past week 5 members made the trip the the NYS State Preparedness Training Center to complete the NYS Swift and Flood water rescue technician course.

These members completed multiple rescue methods including rescue swimmer, boat based rescues, and many others.

These members increase the number of rescues who make up the West Seneca Swift Water Team.

G.R.I.T.

This past weekend, ten members of Seneca Hose participated in the annual Getzville Rapid Intervention Training (GRIT). This two-day hands-on course focuses on FAST or RIT skills and challenges participants both physically and mentally with scenarios based on real firefighter line of duty deaths.

Firefighters from across Erie County, and as far away as the City of Geneva, took part in this year’s event.

The Seneca Hose firefighters who attended the training were Captain Nick Sikorski, Lieutenant David Tasca, Lieutenant Kate Anderson, Firefighter Zach Quinn, Firefighter Noel Merced, Firefighter Devin Talty, and Firefighter Sam Jaworski. Chiefs Seufert and Conley, along with Firefighter Janicki, served as members of the instructional staff.

Seneca Hose members recently completed comprehensive training in vehicle stabilization and air bag operations.

During the hands-on session, crews practiced techniques for securing vehicles involved in accidents, creating a safe and controlled environment for both patients and responders. The training included the use of stabilization struts, cribbing, and step chocks to prevent movement during extrication efforts.

Members also received detailed instruction on air bag operations, focusing on safely lifting and stabilizing vehicles with high-pressure lifting bags in various scenarios. The training emphasized proper equipment setup, weight distribution, and maintaining constant scene awareness.

Ongoing training like this helps ensure members are prepared to respond efficiently and safely when emergency situations arise.

Members from each of the 6 districts in West Seneca participated this morning in a joint water supply operations drill.

The morning started with each department displaying features of their district's apparatus, including specialized tools and equipment.

Afterward, crews moved to the training site to begin feed operations. Departments worked together to relay water from two separate sources. Newer members had the chance to learn the basics of hand line operations.

Overnight Rollover on Seneca Street

Shortly before 3 a.m., Seneca Hose Chief 9 and Rescue 5 responded to a rollover accident on Seneca Street, located near the Rt 90 overpass.

Responding units arrived to find all vehicle occupants safely out of the vehicles. A NYSEG utility pole had been broken off at its base and was being supported by the primary power lines. The Thruway Authority was notified because of low-hanging wires over Rt 90.

Seneca Street has been reopened, but traffic may be affected later today due to ongoing utility pole repairs.

Crews have been keeping busy this month.

Wednesday afternoon, Ladder 6 and Engine 1 responded mutual aid to Union for a working structure fire with exposure issues.

Sunday evening, while members were at the station for an officers meeting, crews quickly upstaffed Ladder 6 and responded with Reserve for the confirmed structure fire with reports of people trapped. Crews assisted initial engine companies with placing an additional line into operation. Simultaneously crews split to conduct a rapid search. Crews worked to locate hidden areas of fire in the ceiling that had extended into the attic. Engine 1 also responded and stood by at Reserve’s Berg Road Station to cover any additional calls for service.
