READING DRAGONS & FRIENDS

There’s a brand-new Summer Reading adventure at the Library!

The more time you spend reading, the more collectible cards you earn, featuring a variety of mythical creatures at different levels of power. Read all summer long to collect cards and build a powerful deck ready for battle.

This program is perfect for fans of Pokémon, Adopt Me, Harry Potter/Percy Jackson fandoms, or gaming.

Who can collect cards?
This program is designed for kids entering kindergarten through adults. Adults: this is for you, too! Bask in the nostalgia of games and trading cards from your childhood. Have a kid who’s participating? Join the fun by collecting alongside them—plan family game nights, inspire your child to keep going, and model a lifelong love of reading.

How can I earn cards?
Beginning on Monday, June 1, pick up a starter pack of 3 Reading Dragons & Friends cards, rules for battle, and a tracker that shows you how to earn more cards. For every 30 minutes of reading, come to the library and choose a new card for your collection. Listening to audiobooks, graphic novels, magazines and reading with family and friends all counts toward your reading time. Cards will be available at the library through August.

How do I play the card game?
Grow your collection of unique mythical creature cards and battle against the decks of friends or family members. Battle games are similar to Rock, Paper, Scissors, with some cards having more power than others.

Not into collecting cards? Teens and adults can grab a reading bookmark instead! Bring it to the library for a ticket each time you finish a book. Each ticket is a chance to win a raffle prize at summer’s end!

Pick up your starter pack in June and collect cards through August.

Read all summer long to earn Dragons & Friends cards.

"Hard Times, You Say? Smile, This Is The Great Depression" follows two young men who get a second shot at life after moving to a small, prosperous city with eclectic people and adventure. Amidst the Great Depression, they find romance, mystery, and inspiration in hard times.

Two young professionals with promising careers become jobless and seek work where they can find it. The two young men meet for the first time when they are among the few picked for an arduous day job. There begins an adventure that takes them to a Jersey City railyard, where they are introduced to the Hobo life by an enigmatic homeless man. The story unfolds from there and follows the two as they settle in a small, prosperous city in southern New York state. The city serves as a transportation hub amid the blossoming oil and financial industries, is home to a major university, and tolerates the title of "Little Chicago" as a neutral ground for the Mafia. The two young men gather a unique, eclectic blend of new friends and embrace young, old, and culturally diverse people. Life-threatening situations arise when an old antagonist appears, and a jealous competitor seeks revenge. This piece of historical fiction from the annals of the "Great Depression" is a love story and a story of mystery and intrigue. It is a story of humanity surviving hard, hard times.

Get to know our Platinum Community Business Partner: Rick Gray Woodworking

Rick worked with us when we had to remove the magnificent maple tree that presided over the Library’s front lawn. He helped us mill the boards from that mighty maple so that we could continue to let that beautiful tree-ancestor be a part of the Library. After proper aging, that milled wood will get crafted into a beautiful table for the Library’s computers.

Superlative work, cooperative service!
