Thank you for coming to Comptroller Sean Scanlon to listen to our children! We are looking forward to helping you get reelected so you can continue to work towards a better future for all, but especially our young people.
The other morning, I had a high school student look me in the eye and tell me she was terrified every day of a school shooting. A classmate told me that it’s normalized to “stay quiet” about the stress and anxiety they feel. Another talked about “getting lost in my phone” as an escape from the daily pressure he feels.
The challenges facing this generation of young people are real and staggering, and as a dad and as an elected official, I’m increasingly interested in figuring out what we can do about it.
So I went to Suffield High this week to listen to a group of sophomores talk about, well, everything. Academic pressure. Social media. Cell phones. Mental health.
Like so many public policy problems we face, there aren’t easy answers to these. But I left more convinced than ever that we have to take what they’re grappling with way more seriously. And I left hopeful that, with their help, we will.
