August is National Emergency Management Awareness Month, and we’re also in the middle of Atlantic hurricane season, making the Fair a perfect opportunity to learn a little more about how you, your family, and your community can be better prepared before an emergency happens.

A series of emergencies have strained the Island community this summer, and understaffed first responders across the Island are raising concerns about public safety.

Island-wide figures from the Dukes County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) communication center, which fields the entire Island’s emergency calls, show that the number of police response calls haven’t actually gone up, but through interviews with many local chiefs, it’s clear that the severity and complexity of the calls has increased.

[High Surf Advisory Wed Into Thu For The South Coast] A High Surf Advisory has been issued Wed into Thu along ocean exposed beaches of the south coast including the Cape and Islands. Large breaking waves are expected in the surf zone along with dangerous rip currents.
