168th New Jersey State Police Recruit Training Class Graduates

Today, New Jersey State Police Acting Superintendent Jeanne Hengemuhle and Governor Mikie Sherilll presented badges to New Jersey’s newest state troopers during a graduation ceremony at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, NJ.

“Graduation from our police academy is a proud milestone, but it is not a destination—it marks the beginning of a career defined by preparation, professionalism, and lifelong learning. The landscape of law enforcement is constantly evolving, and the challenges our troopers face today will not be the same challenges they confront tomorrow. Our responsibility is to ensure they are equipped not only for the duties before them now, but for those that will emerge in the years ahead,” said Jeanne Hengemuhle, Acting Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “The academy has provided these graduates with a strong and deliberate foundation—one built on discipline, knowledge, and skill. Yet the true measure of their service will be found in their ongoing commitment to train, to learn, and to grow. Today, they are prepared to serve with the skills and readiness they have worked hard to develop. Tomorrow, they must be prepared to adapt, to lead, and to meet new challenges with the same determination that brought them to this moment.”

Did you know that flooding causes more deaths in the United States than any other thunderstorm-related hazard? More than 50% of flood-related deaths are due to someone driving or walking into floodwaters.

When you come to a road covered with water, it’s difficult to tell the depth of the water or the condition of the road underneath, especially at night. Two feet of water can sweep an SUV off the road. Just six inches of fast-moving floodwater can knock you off your feet.

It’s easy to forget the lives lost and devastating damage a major storm can leave behind, especially as time passes.

Sept. 1, 2026 marks five years since Ida impacted New Jersey. Through the Blue Acres Program, DEP continues to help families whose homes were destroyed or severely impacted by flooding. With buyouts, NJ residents in high-risk floodplains can relocate and build safer futures.

Flood Safety Week is here! Do you know your flood risk?

With future storms in mind, DEP launched the “Know Your Flood Risk” tool to help New Jersey residents understand their risk and prepare. The easy-to-use resource combines FEMA flood maps with updated climate data from DEP and Rutgers to show how flooding could affect your area today and in the future.

You can also find information on weather and emergency alerts, New Jersey’s real estate disclosure requirements, DEP Blue Acres buyouts, and learn which communities across the state are facing the greatest flood risks.
