Today we celebrate and recognize National D.A.R.E. Day. D.A.R.E. is a program originally created to combat the drug epidemic in the 80s and 90s. Since its creation, D.A.R.E. Has expanded its curriculum to include the lower grades.

The West Union Police Department has partnered with North Fayette Valley Schools to bring back D.A.R.E. To its classrooms after it was dropped several years ago.

We want to take this opportunity to thank Officer Ty Hollingsworth for the countless hours of preparation, planning and teaching that he gives to the community. He is quietly working behind the scenes in the classrooms to help make this world a better place.

Although Officer Ty is trained to teach any level of D.A.R.E., he specializes in 2nd and 3rd grades. He believes starting sooner with education has a more profound impact on the students. The 2nd and 3rd grade curriculum focuses more on how to be safe instead of the anti-drug curriculum taught to older classes.

Please take a second to help us thank Officer Ty for his dedication to making this community better one student at a time. We are proud to call him one of our police officers.

On April 12th, 2026, the West Union Police Department was contacted by a concerned citizen about a suspicious vehicle parked behind a local business. West Union Police Department arrived on scene and found a running truck hooked to a camper. A male subject approached the officer and was subsequently detained pending investigation. Durning the officer’s investigation it was founded that the truck was stolen out of Sumner, Iowa along with the camper being stolen out of West Union, Iowa. Subsequently Jared Miller was placed under arrest and transported to the Fayette County Jail.

I was brought to the officer’s attention that the truck was originally stolen with a separate trailer containing 18 paddle boats. The trailer with the boats was also located in West Union at a separate location and recovered. Miller has been charged with four counts of Theft in the 1st Degree all Class C Felonies. Miller is being held awaiting his initial appearance. The West Union Police Department was assisted by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County Communications Center, and the Bremer County Sheriff's Office.
