📱🚑 “Why are y’all on your phones??”

Because we’re not ignoring our patient… we’re talking to the hospital.
When you see a West EMS medic tapping on a cellphone, we’re usually using Pulsara, a secure EMS-to-hospital communication app that lets us send updates and coordinate with the ER before we even hit the bay doors.

What we’re doing on the phone (no, it’s not TikTok):

✅ Alerting the ER we’re coming and sharing an ETA
✅ Making sure the right people are ready when we arrive (nurse, doc, respiratory, etc.)
✅ Sending time-sensitive info securely so care can start faster

And here’s the important part:
One of us can communicate while the other is still treating, monitoring, and reassessing. Your care doesn’t pause because a screen lights up.

So if you catch us “texting,” just know we’re doing the boring adult thing: getting the hospital ready for you.

🚑 HELP WEST EMS HELP YOU (When we arrive)

When EMS shows up, we’re moving fast—but a few things from you can make care safer and quicker:
✅ Tell us what’s going on right now
What happened in 1–2 sentences
When it started (the time matters!)

✅ Have these ready if you can
Medication list (or the bottles)
Allergies
Major medical history (heart/lung issues, diabetes, seizures, etc.)
Recent surgeries/hospital visits

✅ Be honest—even if it’s uncomfortable
Alcohol, drugs, missed meds, or what was taken today helps us treat you safely.
We’re not there to judge—we’re there to help.

✅ Clear the way
Secure pets
Move clutter from the hallway
Turn on lights / unlock the door if possible

📌 Pro tip: Keep a “medical info” note in your phone (meds, allergies, conditions, emergency contact). It saves time when seconds count.
Share this—because the person who needs it might not be you.

We are tossing around the idea of opening a Warming Center at the City of West Community Center on Tokio Road. The Police Department can staff the center Saturday from 3pm to Midnight, Sunday from 7am to Midnight, Monday from 7am to Midnight and Tuesday from 7am to 11am.
We know that in the past, there has not been much need for a warming center - if any at all. However, if final forecasts confirm that this will be an extremely cold winter storm impacting our area, we will open the center. We will decide one way or the other on Friday morning and give an update.
Side note - we would welcome any snack items that would be donated so we can give them out to anyone who wants or needs to come by and get warm. If you would like to donate snack items feel free to drop them off at the Police Department before the storm or at the Center if we open it up.

🚑 Did you know your phone can speak for you in an emergency? 📱❤️

If you’re ever hurt or too sick to talk, your smartphone can store important medical info that West EMS (and other first responders) can access to help care for you faster.

✅ What to add to your phone’s Medical ID / Emergency Info:

Name & date of birth
Allergies
Medications
Medical conditions
Blood type (optional)
Emergency contacts
Notes like “Diabetic,” “Seizures,” “On blood thinners,” etc.

🔓 How West EMS may be able to access it (without your passcode):
🍎 iPhone (Medical ID):
From the lock screen, we can tap Emergency → Medical ID
(This works if you’ve turned on “Show When Locked.”)

🤖 Android (Emergency Info):
From the lock screen, we can tap Emergency or access Emergency Information
(Exact steps vary by phone model, but it’s built into most Androids.)

📲 Set it up in 2 minutes:
iPhone: Health app → Medical ID → Edit → turn ON “Show When Locked”

Android: Settings → Safety & emergency (or “Emergency info”) → Add your details

⚠️ Quick reminder: If it’s not set to show on the lock screen, we may not be able to see it in an emergency.

Comment “DONE” when you’ve set yours up — and tag a family member to do it too. ✅

🚑 West EMS Safety Tip: Help us find you faster.

In an emergency, seconds matter and one of the biggest delays we run into is not being able to quickly identify the correct house (especially at night).

✅ Please take 2 minutes this week to check these:

🏠 House numbers
Make sure they’re visible from the road

Use large, contrasting numbers (dark on light or light on dark)

Add a light or reflective numbers if possible

🚗 Driveway & access

Keep the driveway clear of parked cars when possible

If you have a gate, make sure it can be opened quickly

If you live off a county road or have a long driveway, consider placing address numbers at the entrance

Trim branches or brush that make it hard for an ambulance to get through

📍 Bonus: If you’re comfortable, drop a pin on your home in your phone’s map app so you can share your location if needed.

Small changes like these can help West EMS get to you and your loved ones faster when it matters most.

💬 Question: Do you know if your house number can be seen clearly at night?
