The Innovation Institute just released the latest MA Quantum Ecosystem Report highlighting how MA’s quantum ecosystem continues to grow across research, industry & commercialization. 

MA now has 76 quantum & quantum-adjacent companies, 138 research groups & nearly $391M in cumulative private investment, alongside sustained progress in infrastructure, workforce development & public-private partnerships that are helping bring quantum technologies closer to practical use. 

As quantum technologies continue to advance, they have the potential to accelerate drug discovery, strengthen cybersecurity, improve communications technologies & support the growth of new industries and high-skilled jobs across MA.

Two new projects have been awarded funding through MeHI’s Digital Health Sandbox Rolling Grant program, supporting the development & evaluation of digital health technologies that address real-world clinical challenges. 

Apollon received a $50,000 award to partner with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Clinical and Translational Research (MIT CCTR) to support system development & feasibility testing of its noninvasive continuous glucose monitoring technology. The solution is designed to improve glucose monitoring without the need for needles or implanted sensors. 

Lexi was awarded $60,000 to collaborate with Mass General Brigham Digital AI to evaluate the accuracy, usability & acceptability of its AI-powered medical interpretation platform in simulated emergency department scenarios. The technology is designed to improve communication between clinicians & patients with limited English proficiency.

MBI & Community Broadband Networks (CBN) celebrated the launch of high-speed internet service today for more than 150 households at the Southbridge Housing Authority’s 60 Charlton St. & 150 Main St. properties. The project marks the first phase of a broader CBN initiative to expand broadband access across Southern Worcester County. 

Residents, community leaders & project partners gathered to celebrate this Residential Retrofit Program milestone and the expanded connectivity it brings to Southbridge residents. MBI also recognized the town’s continued commitment to digital accessthrough the completion of its Digital Equity Plan & implementation efforts focused on digital literacy, device distribution & one-on-one technology support.

Today, the Innovation Institute convened leaders from across MA’s robotics ecosystem at Boston Dynamics for the Celebrating Robotics in MA event, bringing together industry, academia, startups, government & ecosystem partners to highlight the Commonwealth’s leadership in robotics, automation & physical AI. 

Innovation Institute Director Patrick Larkin opened the program with remarks on the strength of MA’s robotics ecosystem, which includes more than 500 robotics companies, 100+ R&D labs & a growing network of innovators advancing commercialization across the state. 

The program featured remarks from Massachusetts Office of Economic Development Secretary Eric Paley, who announced the first cohort of MA’s Robotic Digital Twin Initiative awards. Funded through the Governor Maura Healey MassLeads Act, the program is designed to accelerate robotics commercialization by expanding access to digital twin technologies across the Commonwealth. 

Attendees also heard from MassRobotics Executive Director Tom Ryden before joining a panel discussion moderated by Harvard University University’s Conor Walsh featuring Familiar Machines & Magic CEO Colin Angle, Luminous COO Bob Boyd, MA AI Hub Director Sabrina Mansur & Piaggio Fast Forward CEO Greg Lynn. 

The event also marked the launch of the State of Robotics campaign, a new initiative focused on the people, companies & institutions shaping the future of robotics in MA.

MassTech Chief Investment Strategist Ben Linville-Engler spoke at the Lantern Innovation Symposium, joining leaders from AFWERX, the Defense Innovation Unit, Hanscom Air Force Base & industry partners for discussions on accelerating the delivery of capabilities to soldiers. 

Linville-Engler’s presentation highlighted the role of the Northeast Microelectronics Coalition (NEMC) & SHIELD in strengthening MA’s defense innovation ecosystem through technology development, workforce growth & cross-sector collaboration. 

Hosted by The Lantern: Hanscom Collaboration & Innovation Center at the UMass Lowell Applied Research Corporation Northstar Campus, the symposium focused on reducing barriers to technology transition, accelerating innovation adoption & leveraging partnerships across government, industry & academia. 

A consistent theme throughout the event was that moving technologies from development to operational use requires trust, information sharing & strong collaboration across the innovation ecosystem.

The Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, the Innovation Institute & UMass Amherst celebrated the completion of resilient infrastructure improvements at the Gloucester Marine Station, marking a milestone for collaborative research, coastal resilience & MA’s growing blue tech economy. 

Supported by a $2M award through the Innovation Institute’s Collaborative Research & Development Matching Grant Program, the project funded the installation of a new seawall, dock & crane at the station. At the Gloucester Marine Station, those improvements will help expand marine science research, strengthen industry partnerships & create new opportunities for students, researchers & coastal communities. 

The celebration featured remarks from Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll, Innovation Institute Senior Director, Operations & Grantmaking James Byrnes Jr, Gloucester Mayor Paul Lundberg, UMass President Marty Meehan, UMass Amherst Chancellor Javier Reyes and other state, local & university leaders. Gloucester Marine Station Director Katie Kahl, PhD, whose leadership has helped advance the station’s growth as a center for research, partnership development & community engagement, served as master of ceremonies for the event. 

The event also honored the legacy of the late Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, whose advocacy helped advance UMass Amherst’s vision for the site. The facility was formally named the Ann-Margaret Ferrante Living Lab for Marine Science & Education. 

As a hub for collaborative research, workforce development & community engagement, the Gloucester Marine Station connects researchers, industry partners & coastal communities working to address challenges facing the marine environment while supporting the long-term sustainability of MA’s coastal economy.

MeHI recently convened leaders, clinicians, innovators & entrepreneurs from across the state’s digital health ecosystem for MA Digital Health Forward 2026 to explore how emerging technologies can help address some of primary care’s most pressing challenges. 

Nine finalists competed for $320K in awards to advance solutions across three priority areas: 

1. Reducing administrative burden 
2. Supporting the primary care workforce 
3. Improving patient access to care. 

The finalists presented technologies designed to streamline provider communication, improve care coordination & support AI-powered clinical documentation. Other solutions focused on reducing after-hours workload, enabling more flexible care delivery models & promoting clinician well-being. Participants also showcased tools aimed at reducing cultural, geographic, language & digital barriers to care while expanding access for underserved communities.

MBI is supporting digital skills training, device access & internet connectivity for up to 85 residents in Methuen through a partnership with Nevins Library . The library’s Tech2U program helps multilingual learners strengthen the skills they need to pursue career opportunities, access online services & navigate an increasingly digital world. 
 
Many participants already use technology in their daily lives & are digitally literate in their native languages. The challenge is often applying those skills in English while learning to navigate new devices, systems & online resources. Through Tech2U’s 14-hour Learn to Earn program, participants build confidence using technology in English while developing skills that support employment, education & everyday digital access. 
 
Graduates of the Tech2U program receive a Chromebook & one year of internet service, helping ensure they can continue learning, accessing resources & pursuing new opportunities after completing the program.

CAM is accepting applications for the MA Manufacturing Accelerator Program (MMAP), which helps MA manufacturers modernize operations, adopt new technologies & strengthen their workforce. 

Through expert technical support, cohort-based learning & matching grants of up to $300K, MMAP supports manufacturers as they pursue strategic investments that improve productivity, competitiveness & long-term growth. 

The program is designed for manufacturers ready to advance projects that can deliver measurable business outcomes while strengthening MA’s manufacturing ecosystem. 

Applications for the next MMAP cohort are open through Friday, July 24.

More than a summer housing or internship program, TechGeneration gives participants a front-row seat to the people, companies & institutions driving innovation across the Commonwealth. Through cohort experiences, networking opportunities & industryengagement, students can build meaningful connections while exploring what it looks like to launch a career in MA.
