Heads up folks, the alewives have arrived! We repeat, the alewives have arrived! We highly encourage you to check out this remarkable event - it's SO MANY fish - but please follow the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust guidelines to help protect our hard working fish friends. 🐟
🐟The alewives are here 🐟 We counted a few fishy friends at the Highland Lake dam and Gulf of Maine Research Institute spotted 50 in the southern viewing pool at Mill Brook Preserve as of yesterday. It will probably be a few days or so before we hit peak migration and the fish pools are full, but they're starting to make their way up the river!
We have a number of resources to help you make the most of this incredible wildlife phenomenon:

For the health of this fish migration, we have cordoned off the fish viewing pools; please do not cross the ropes. Migrating is stressful, and extra work in that process, like avoiding people or pets, can cause too much stress, and then they may not make it to the lake to spawn. The ropes exist to ensure all people and pets stay out of the water, and to stop soil from eroding into the stream, so the fish make it to their destination happy and healthy.
