Abigail, our Maine Conservation Corps Environmental Steward, visited Mill Brook South recently to clean up some big blow downs from our windy summer storms. The trail should be clear again, thanks to her elite chainsaw skills 🙌

It's the last weekend before Summer Trail Challenge comes to a close. If you haven't completed your passport yet, now's the time to check off those last few stops and record your final fun facts!

Once you've filled out your passport, hold onto it! You'll need it for prize pick-up at REI Westbrook in mid-September. (And if you've filled out a passport but not registered online, you'll need to do that too before you can collect your prize—https://www.prlt.org/summer-trail-challenge-2026).

Emily was getting F.O.M.O. from seeing all the photo updates of Gorham Community Forest, so she decided to go check out the work herself! Come along for her walk in the woods with this video preview of the new trail being built by Chris Cyr that we should be able to open to the public later this fall!

If you want to lend a hand and help us finish this trail or are interested in other trail work opportunities, you can sign up at prlt.org/volunteer

We've found some friends under the cover board at Black Brook Preserve! While checking off a stop on the Summer Trail Challenge, several people have found little (and not so little) garter snakes hanging out in the cozy leaves.

You might remember hearing about Clara and Emily installing these pieces of plywood way back in March. Cover boards retain moisture and heat, making them ideal for cold-blooded species, and are used by wildlife biologists and researchers to survey populations and diversity within an ecosystem. Now that the cover boards have been in place for ~6 months, we're starting to see some activity!

Anyone is welcome to lift up these cover boards and explore what’s underneath, but always be careful when interacting with wildlife, and make sure to put the board back how you found it.

Here are some pics we've already received from our community as they search for this year's locations.

Come muck around in the stream with us next week! Clara is leading a hunt for macroinvertebrates at Mill Brook Preserve on Thursday morning - perhaps the perfect outing if your kids (or if you're a kid-at-heart; adults are welcome too!) are not back in school yet?

We'll show how to collect small stream organisms and sort them for observation and identification, discuss how macroinvertebrates can indicate water quality, and share how YOU can contribute to an important community science project through Maine Audubon's Marsh and Stream Explorers, which acts as a screening tool for DEP’s water quality assessments.

Tres chic 💅 We've always thought it's pretty cool to care about conservation, native plants, sunsets, and fish (and we love a meme). If you want to join these chic folks, check out the events and volunteer opportunities on our website at https://www.prlt.org.

Our staff were craving some wicking, light layers for the summer heat, so we made some! We now have long-sleeved sun hoodies and short-sleeved performance t-shirts, as well as a cute little tote, available for ordering on our Bonfire store.

Each shirt is available in multiple colors (and the t-shirt comes in women’s and youth cuts too!) and features “Presumpscot Regional Land Trust” on the front and our logo on the back with the tagline “protected lands, healthy waters, vibrant communities.” The tote bag is made from 100% recycled cotton canvas and features our favorite piece of advice: “go outside.”

Order by August 24 to receive your merch in the first batch!
