NOW YOU KNOW!

Have you ever taken a closer look at the church windows when you visit your local house of worship?

This posted letter is dated way back from 1910 and is from a glass Company that still is in business today. This Company has done windows for the Yorkminster Cathedral in York, England. They also have done the glass in the Hennipen County Clock Tower in City Hall.

Certainly the amounts charged in 1910 are hard to believe compared with today's quotes.

The multiple-colored window images illustrate the symbolism of many of a church's beliefs. Monks used to have art included in their stained-glass windows to teach from them as parishioners could not read.

Do you have a favorite window from the ones shown? Can you describe the meaning of each?

2. When was this building built?
3. What year was this building destroyed?

NOW YOU KNOW!

You are invited to the wedding! This bride and groom had their official portrait professionally done.

Note that the long-stemmed flowers were worn for everyone except the bride. The men each wore a flower but the custom at that time was to wear it with the stem point upward. This flower placement and style was standard during the late 1800s and into mid-20th century.

This bride certainly picked a very unique veil and headdress combination! The wearing of white by the bride was to symbolized a statement of wealth and possible royalty. Before 1840, white was rarely worn because it was difficult to clean. The white wedding dress craze began in 1840 when Queen Victoria wore a white satin gown to marry Prince Albert.

If you are or were married, did you choose a white dress? Do you remember the day you said YES to the dress you picked? How did the people in your wedding party dress?

NOW YOU KNOW!

This past week History Alive Project volunteers met with Jenni Horbacz, Westby Westby Area Chamber of Commerce Interim Director, as they all met at the History Alive Project Hus, 218 N. Main Street, Westby WI.

HAP volunteers were very impressed with Jenni's energy, sincerity and wealth of new ideas to work on as the Westby Area Chamber of Commerce is committed to tell the story of Westby and what it has to offer! They discussed many of the things that could and do draw business and people TO Westby and how the tourists, shoppers and would-be residents could further make Westby a "destination city!"

HAP volunteers shared many of the artifacts, photos and recent new bunad outfits that are part of the HAP Collection. Jenni also learned about the history and mission of HAP and how HAP can, along with additional non-traditional businesses, be a valued member with shared goals of the Chamber.

Congrats to Jenni on her new role; HAP looks forward to working with her and the Chamber!

KNOW YOU KNOW!

History Alive Project found this photo in a recent donation. This area still is what this looks like even today. Can you guess where this is? Have you driven on this road? Any guesses as to the model and year of the vehicle? Lastly, one has to wonder who took this photo and why?

NOW YOU KNOW!

Earlier this week, History Alive Project posted a head shot of a very pensive Norwegian bride, wearing a very ornate crown!

This image shows another bride with a similar crown, a Hardanger fiddle player, her very dashing groom and a few friends.

Where are they headed? (To or from the Church?)
Did anyone in this photo ever emigrate to the United States or Canada?
How old is the bride / groom and fiddler?
Who took the photo?

NOW YOU KNOW!

What a perfect time to retire the History Alive Project Hus' American and Norwegian flags at 218 N. Main Street in Westby with two brand new ones, what with Flag Day coming up
June 14 for the U.S.A.

The two were getting very sun-faded and worn and volunteers knew the correct way to retire the old flags.

According to the VFW, you first need to fold the flag to be disposed of in its customary manner and then place the flag in a designated official box. Westby area residents have such a place adjacent to the Highway 27 Veterans Memorial site.

With our country celebrating its 250th birthday next month, it is historically nice to know that the Second Continental Congress in 1777 resolved to officially adopt the Stars and Stripes design.

NOW YOU KNOW!

As in previous years, History Alive Project stays committed to its continual outreach in the community. This time HAP volunteers purchased a new flower pot, added flowers plus the two flags to thank the Westby Police Department for all they do every single day!

When you see any of the members of our City's Police Department, give them a big thumbs up!
