Medevac Response in Westfield

Westfield Ladder 1 and Engine 2 responded to assist with a medical emergency involving a fall victim and established a landing zone for a medevac helicopter.

The patient was treated on scene by Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad and Medic 1 before being transported to Echo Lake Park, where NorthSTAR landed and airlifted the patient to a trauma center for further treatment.

Tour 2 was on duty.

We wish the patient well and a speedy recovery.

The Westfield Fire Department is saddened to announce the passing of retired firefighter Anthony “Tony” Mazza, a lifelong Westfield resident who passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the age of 92.

Tony proudly served as a member of the Westfield Fire Department from April 1, 1960, until June 1, 1970, when an injury sustained in the line of duty forced him to retire at the young age of 36.

Tony will be remembered not only for his service to the Westfield community, but also for his dedication to his family and his friendly, outgoing personality. He was a lifelong member of the Westfield community and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The Westfield Fire Department extends our deepest condolences to the entire Mazza family during this difficult time. We are grateful for Tony’s service and sacrifice to our community, and we will remember him with gratitude and respect.

Rest in peace, Tony. Thank you for your service.

WESTFIELD FIRE, POLICE AND EMS RESPOND TO A STRUCTURE FIRE ON MARYLAND STREET

On Tuesday August 11, 2026, at approximately 10:54pm, the Westfield Fire Department responded to a report of a residential structure fire on the 200 block of Maryland Street. The first Westfield Fire Department units arrived on scene at 10:58pm, to find a 2-story single family dwelling, with heavy smoke showing from the rear of division two of the structure. Upon arrival, fire units immediately initiated an aggressive interior fire attack while simultaneously conducting a primary search of the residence to ensure all occupants had safely evacuated. The main body of the fire was located on the second floor of the residence, where crews quickly initiated suppression operations and brought the fire under control.

The incident escalated to two alarms, bringing Union County Fire Mutual Aid companies to the scene and resources were staged at Fire Headquarters to cover the town for additional calls. Off-duty Westfield Fire Department members were recalled providing supplementary assistance on scene of the incident. The Town of Westfield, NJ Police Department aided with street closers, traffic, crowd control and scene security. The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, along with emergency medical services from around the county, assisted in providing firefighter rehabilitation. No injuries were reported.

The fire was placed under control at 11:35pm, with Fire Department personnel remaining on scene into the overnight hours. The fire was investigated by the Westfield Fire Department, and the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature. The Westfield Construction Official deemed the dwelling uninhabitable.

Tour 2 members completed hands-on drills involving fireground ventilation and vehicle rescue operations. Training emphasized effective use of department equipment, firefighter safety, vehicle stabilization, creating access for patients, and the safe removal of occupants from damaged vehicles.

Last night, during a 2 1/2-hour period, the Westfield Fire Department responded to 25 storm-related calls for service throughout the community. Calls included wires down, transformer fires, trees into homes, a house struck by lightning, and several other storm-related incidents.

The storm activity continued into the overnight hours, with fire department personnel responding to two additional storm-related calls, bringing the total to 27 storm-related calls for service.

Tour 4 was working last night, and our firefighters remained ready to respond as the storms moved through the area.

As a reminder, please treat all downed wires as live wires. Do not approach, touch, or drive over downed wires, and keep a safe distance from the area. If you encounter downed wires, report them immediately by calling 9-1-1.
