Its almost that time of year again. Every spring Fire Departments around the area respond to multiple brush fires that could easily be prevented. Even though the ground may still be wet, dead leaves and underbrush that has not yet started to grow for the year can become dry and fire will spread fast. Help us out by keeping any camp fires small and contained and have water nearby in case it were to accidentally spread.

Spring is nearly here, and so is the annual burn ban. As the snow melts and temperatures rise, New York State is at an increased risk of wildfires in the spring. In effect from March 16 through May 14, the annual burn ban prohibits residents from burning vegetation and brush with few exceptions.

Congratulations Chief Karlstrom!

Congratulations Chief Karlstrom!

Erik Karlstrom Appointed Chief of Police for the Village of Westfield, Westfield Police Department.

The Village of Westfield and Westfield Police Department is proud to announce the appointment of Erik Karlstrom as the new Chief of Police.

Chief Erik Karlstrom brings a proven record of military and law enforcement leadership to the position. A Village resident since returning from a combat deployment in 2013, he enlisted in the United States Army National Guard at the age of 17 and served for 11 years, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 2012, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, serving under NATO command with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). His military service instilled the values of discipline, accountability, and leading from the front that continue to guide his leadership today.

Following his military service, Chief Erik Karlstrom pursued a career in law enforcement, graduating from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Academy 2015. He went on to serve as both a Police Officer and Deputy Sheriff, dedicating his career to protecting and serving his local community. Throughout his tenure, he advanced from patrol operations to School Resource Officer (SRO), and later to Sergeant of the Navigation Division, where he oversaw multiple operational units and specialized enforcement initiatives.

Chief Erik Karlstrom previously served as a part-time officer with the Westfield Police Department from 2015 to 2017. In 2023, he returned in a part-time capacity to assist the department during a critical time of need, demonstrating his continued commitment to the Village and its residents.

Chief Erik Karlstrom’s leadership philosophy reflects the values instilled through both military and law enforcement service; discipline, responsibility, teamwork, and leading from the front. He is committed to strengthening officer development, enhancing operational effectiveness, and maintaining transparency with the community.

Village officials expressed confidence in Chief Karlstrom’s experience, dedication, and long-standing connection to the department and community.

Chief Erik Karlstrom’s statement on the matter:

“It is a tremendous honor to serve the Village of Westfield as Chief of Police. My commitment is to lead with integrity, set high professional standards, and ensure our department remains focused on service, accountability, and community partnership. Westfield is a strong community, a beautiful place to live, and I look forward to working alongside our officers and residents to continue building trust and ensuring public safety. Thank you for having the trust and faith in my leadership”

At 6am this morning our Firefighters were dispatched to a mutual aid structure fire on Felton Rd. Car 291, Engine 292 and Ambulance 291 initially responded to the scene to the fully involved fire. While completing overhaul operations we received an alarm for a smoking fan in a air handling unit at Westfield Hospital. Car 292 and Engine 292 responded from Felton Rd., along with North Lake Engine 253. The crews along with maintenance were able to isolate the fan and remove the smoke from the building. Thanks to all our members and mutual aid departments who braved the single digit temperature this morning.
